The New York Jets have officially announced the retirement of CB Donnie Abraham on Monday, July 18. "My decision to retire from the game that I've enjoyed playing for nine seasons is in the best interest of my family and our future," said Abraham, who retires after playing nine seasons in the NFL. "This is an opportunity for me to spend more time with my children and pursue personal business interests. This was a tough call to make because of how well the Jets' organization has treated me as a player and a person, and how much I enjoy playing with the guys on this team."

Updating previous reports, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports New York Jets CB Donnie Abraham has indeed told team officials he plans to retire. One of the NFL's classiest performers, Abraham is leaving the game on his terms and at a point when he is still a very productive player. "Donnie just decided that for family reasons, and because of some business opportunities, the time was right," agent Jack Reale told ESPN.com on Thursday evening, July 14. "He is very appreciative of what the Jets have done for him, the time that (coach) Herm Edwards gave him to sort this out, and the understanding the organization showed him. But he has some exciting things out there, he's been very smart with his money, and one more year in the game wasn't going to make much difference."

He says he's still contemplating retirement largely because of family concerns and feels this week will help him make a final decision. "Who knows where this thing is going to go," Abraham told The Star-Ledger. "I'm coming back to OTAs and see how things go. Part of you wants to keep going and part of you is saying maybe that's enough. The biggest thing is (head coach Herman Edwards) gave me the opportunity to do what I wanted to do." Head coach Herman Edwards said he expects Abraham to participate in the Jets' second set of organized team practices beginning Monday, May 23 bringing an end to speculation that Abraham was about to announce his retirement from football. Early Monday, May 16, Jack Reale, Abraham's agent, said: "Reports of his retirement are a little premature at this point. Donnie played well last year and he has plenty of gas left in the tank."
