Red Sox | Ryan Hanigan could miss several months

Sun, 03 May 2015 11:32:04 -0700

Updating previous reports, Boston Red Sox C Ryan Hanigan (pinkie) underwent surgery on his fractured right pinkie. According to manager John Farrell, he is not expected to return to action until after the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Blake Swihart, who is not yet available in FantasyScore, is expected to serve as Boston's No. 1 catcher during Hanigan's absence, with Sandy Leon ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) backing him up. Swihart is considered to be one of baseball's top catching prospects and should be grabbed in all fantasy formats.

Sat, 02 May 2015 10:22:36 -0700

The Boston Red Sox have placed C Ryan Hanigan (pinkie) on the 15-day disabled list because of a fractured right pinkie. He suffered the injury in the game against the New York Yankees Friday, May 1.

Red Sox | Ryan Hanigan injured

Sat, 02 May 2015 02:11:14 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Ryan Hanigan (hand) left the game against the New York Yankees Friday, May 1, with a broken knuckle that will require surgery. Hanigan is expected to miss a "lengthy" period of time, according to manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Hanigan ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) can be removed from all fantasy lineups. This is also noteworthy because the Red Sox are likely to call up Blake Swihart from the minors shortly, and Swihart is regarded as one of MLB's top catching prospects. Regular-league owners may want to act accordingly, and those in daily leagues will want to see what happens with Swihart before adding him.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez has sprained elbow

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 08:58:36 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) is on the 60-day disabled list due to a right elbow sprain. He will visit with Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his right elbow after undergoing an MRI exam last Friday. C Ryan Hanigan will become the starting catcher to start the season, and C Sandy Leon will serve as the backup. The trade for Leon likely means Boston would rather have C Blake Swihart have more seasoning in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: A combination of Hanigan and Leon hold very little fantasy value in all formats, and the Red Sox catching situation should be avoided wherever possible. Swihart, the team's top prospect, is worth stashing in AL-only and keeper leagues, though, should he come up at some point in 2015.
