Reds | Joey Votto powers up against old mate

Mon, 02 May 2016 23:35:30 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run against San Francisco Giants SP Johnny Cueto, his former teammate, in a loss Monday, May 2.

Fantasy Tip: Votto tied a season best with the three runs driven in. He has started to pick up the pace over the past nine games, driving in eight runs. However, he is still hitting just .231, and he has only four extra-base hits in 91 at-bats. Stick with him, though, as he is too valuable to consider dropping.

Reds | Joey Votto had terrible April

Mon, 02 May 2016 09:49:59 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto's .640 OPS in April was the worst full month of his career, and he was 0-for-19 at one point, which was his longest hitless streak of his career. He finished the month hitting .325 (9-for-25) but had a slash line of just .229/.327/.313 with two home runs and a double on the month. Votto said he would prefer to retire from the game rather than play at a poor level. He has eight years and $199 million left on his current deal.

Fantasy Tip: The retirement talk is a little overblown. Votto is off to a slow start, sure, but he's an elite hitter that should bounce back over the coming months. There is reason to have concerns, though, especially with a weak lineup around him. This would be a great time to try and buy low on Votto, but keep in mind that his runs and RBI opportunities will be limited on a rebuilding club.

Reds | Joey Votto talks retirement

Sun, 01 May 2016 20:41:40 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto said he would rather retire than continue to play at a poor level.

Fantasy Tip: Votto is speaking out of frustration due to his terrible start, and he is too good of a hitter to struggle for the entire year. Consider him a buy-low candidate.

Reds | Joey Votto mired in career low streak

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 10:34:58 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto went hitless Thursday, April 21, against Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta, putting him in a 0-for-19 slump. It's the first time in his career he's gone five straight games without a hit.

Fantasy Tip: Seemingly everyone on the Reds has cooled off since their hot start. A veteran like Votto, though, knows this happens to everyone and it's inevitable he'll snap out of it. The former NL MVP is only hitting .172 on the year with one home run and seven RBI, but as long as he stays healthy, he should end up around .300 with about 25 homers. He'll be fine.

Reds | Joey Votto drives in three

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 05:29:29 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto went 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, April 15.

Fantasy Tip: Votto was off to a quiet start early in the season but has at least one hit in each of his last four games. Votto should be a starting candidates in all leagues because he will be in the starting lineup for most of the time.

Reds | Joey Votto on a mission

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 15:32:10 -0700

Scouts have raved about Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto this spring, and he looks like he's on a mission.

Fantasy Tip: Votto's power resurfaced in the second half last year, and coupled with his patient approach and on-base skills, he remains in the upper-tier of fantasy first basemen. If your draft room allows him to fall because of the lack of talent around him in Cincy, make them pay.

Reds | Joey Votto committed long term

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 11:06:28 -0800

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto said he is committed to staying with the Reds for the long term. Cincinnati is in the midst of a heavy rebuild, but Votto is ready to deal with the highs and lows that could result from a shift to younger talent.

"I'm not going to buy high. That's silly. I'm a buy-low kind of guy. You've got to zig when people are zagging. I think the future of the franchise is headed in the right direction. It's unfortunate to trade away such high-level talent. But as Bob Dylan said, 'The times, they are a changin'," Votto said.

Fantasy Tip: Votto remains an elite first baseman with elite power and on-base skills, despite playing for a rebuilding team. The RBI may not be there, but don't let that influence your decision to pass on him.

Reds | Joey Votto not interested in trade

Sat, 05 Dec 2015 07:09:25 -0800

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto said he loves playing for Cincinnati and would not consider waiving his no-trade clause for any team.

Fantasy Tip: Votto is coming off a very successful 2015 season and should be in the middle of the Reds' lineup for years to come. He finished the season with a .314 batting average, 29 home runs and 80 RBIs and should be an option in one of the earlier rounds of drafts in 2016.

Reds | Joey Votto's streak snapped

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 20:57:32 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto went 0-for-4 with an RBI in a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday, Oct. 3, snapping his streak of reaching base safely in 48 straight games.

Fantasy Tip: Although his streak ended, Votto ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) re-established himself as one of the top hitters in baseball in 2015. He should be an early round pick in seasonal leagues next year, and a first-round option if your league includes OPS as a category.

Reds | Todd Frazier, Joey Votto absent Wednesday

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 14:46:19 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 3B Todd Frazier and 1B Joey Votto are not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 30. 2B Ivan De Jesus is starting at third base and hitting eighth, while 3B Adam Duvall is at first base and is batting sixth against Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester.

Fantasy Tip: Neither De Jesus ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) nor Duvall ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) should attract your attention on FantasyScore as worthwhile gambles as deep sleepers tonight.
