Mon, 04 Mar 2013 12:12:59 -0800 Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto (knee) will play for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic. Votto said he is ready to go. "I was very clear to everyone that I needed the games to make sure my knee was healthy and heading in the right direction," said Votto. "I feel confident in it and confident in my commitment. I feel I can comfortably play. I've never been hurt before, and I wanted a little more of a grace period before the tournament to make sure I'm ready for my primary commitment to the Cincinnati Reds." Votto and Minnesota Twins 1B Justin Morneau are expected to split first base and designated hitter duties.
Thu, 28 Feb 2013 11:07:24 -0800 Cincinnati Reds 1B Joey Votto is unsure if he'll play for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic, and if he does, he wants to have a limited role. Wed, 27 Feb 2013 21:27:51 -0800 Cincinnati Reds 1B Neftali Soto is listed on the 40-man roster as a first baseman, but his path to the majors is unclear with 1B Joey Votto under contract until 2023. Soto is unlikely to see consistent playing time in Cincinnati at first base, so they might move him to third base where he played 96 minor league games in 2009 before moving across the diamond. "They're talking about it, because he came up a third baseman, then really improved as a first baseman," manager Dusty Baker said. "Those two positions are mirror images, plus he has a good throwing arm. So, he could play third base."
