Free-agent C Kevin Mawae (Titans), a former teammate of Washington Redskins DL Albert Haynesworth while with the Tennessee Titans, said during a radio interview that he is not surprised Haynesworth has failed to report for offseason workouts, according to Paul Kuharsky, of ESPN.com. "You talk about somebody putting a mask on and going in backwards to get his paycheck," Mawae said of Haynesworth. "I mean, if you don't want to be there don't take the $21 million contract. How things turned out it's no surprise to guys that have played with him in Tennessee ... You know, he's a (inaudible) player when he wants to be and he can be one of the best in the league and I've said that to him in his face before. But to this point he doesn't want to do it on a consistent basis."

The Associated Press reports professional football players sought help from lawmakers Wednesday, Jan. 20, in preventing NFL owners from imposing a lockout after the 2010 season. Players also said a league victory in a Supreme Court antitrust case could affect free agency and ticket prices. Union president and Tennessee Titans C Kevin Mawae said, 'We want Congress to know that management is pushing us toward a lockout." A league official said the players' time would be better spent negotiating with owners than lobbying Congress.

Mawae suffered a serious right elbow injury last December. "It was a six-month recovery time, and it was a major surgery and trainers and doctors feel good about it. … I have never been this late in the offseason rehabbing before. The Associated Press reports NFL Players Association president Kevin Mawae and acting executive director Richard Berthelsen insisted Thursday, Jan. 29, the process of finding a replacement for late executive director Gene Upshawis progressing on schedule. Mawae said three candidates will be presented to the union's executive board at its annual meeting in Hawaii in March. An election is scheduled to follow, and serious negotiating with the league will not take place before then.

The Associated Press reports the NFL Players Association has questioned why owners would be dissatisfied with the collective bargaining agreement and consider opting out of it. A union-commissioned study showed the average value of the teams has grown from $288 million to $1.04 billion over 10 years, an increase of about 14 percent a year. Union president Kevin Mawae said the salary cap has worked well for all concerned but the players will not ever accept again if it disappears in 2010.

"As a guy who has been in the league for 14 now going on 15 years and being around other veteran guys, for a young guy to get paid that kind of money and never steps foot on an NFL football field, it's a little disheartening to think of," Mawae said. Ryan signed a six-year deal worth $72 million that included $34.75 million in guarantees.

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN.com, reports an effort to oust Gene Upshaw as the NFL Players Association Executive Director is being made on the part of NFL Players. Baltimore Ravens PK Matt Stover e-mailed a plan to fellow player representatives to have a new union boss in place by March 2009. In his e-mail, Stover revealed a conference call among player reps Friday, April 4, in which he said, "I was on that conference call and I am not the only rep who listened and felt that it is time for a change." Upshaw's contract runs through 2010, but he said Tuesday, April 8, he told player representatives at their annual meeting in Maui in March that with a looming labor confrontation with NFL owners, "I would never leave until this deal is done." Upshaw confirmed that hints of a movement ultimately to change the union leadership were in play at the March meetings in Maui. An effort by a group of players to get Philadelphia Eagles FS Brian Dawkins elected as the new NFL Players Association president fell short when Tennessee Titans C Kevin Mawae was voted as its new active-players leader, according to player sources. Mawae is believed to be a supporter of Upshaw.
