Free-agent C Kevin Mawae (Titans) is retiring from the NFL after 16 seasons, reports The Associated Press, according to an official with knowledge of the announcement. Mawae has called a news conference for Friday, Sept. 10, according to the person.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips is still confident OG Kyle Kosier (knee) can slide over to center if something happens to C Andre Gurode, reports ESPNDallas.com's Tim MacMahon. Kosier has never played a game at center and will spend the next four to six weeks recovering from a sprained MCL in his right knee. Dallas plans to evaluate OL Phil Costa, an undrafted rookie, for at least the next game or two before deciding if they need to pursue another option at the position. The Cowboys have no interest in signing unrestricted free-agent C Kevin Mawae (Titans) and will likely wait until after the first cuts in September if they sign another center.

Free-agent C Kevin Mawae (Titans), a former teammate of Washington Redskins DL Albert Haynesworth while with the Tennessee Titans, said during a radio interview that he is not surprised Haynesworth has failed to report for offseason workouts, according to Paul Kuharsky, of ESPN.com. "You talk about somebody putting a mask on and going in backwards to get his paycheck," Mawae said of Haynesworth. "I mean, if you don't want to be there don't take the $21 million contract. How things turned out it's no surprise to guys that have played with him in Tennessee ... You know, he's a (inaudible) player when he wants to be and he can be one of the best in the league and I've said that to him in his face before. But to this point he doesn't want to do it on a consistent basis."

"I've said in the past that I hope our management and the owners can look past the fact that I am president of the PA. But right now it's not looking that way. I'm looking for a job. I've made no secrets about wanting to be back here in Tennessee and I've yet to receive a call from anybody," Mawae said.
