Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Jets OG J.P. Machado recently reworked his contract. Machado, who was signed up through 2005, reduced his salary this season from $650,000 to $530,000. In exchange, he can become an unrestricted free agent in February.

The Bergen Record reports the New York Jets have a wealth of guards to fill in for OG Tom Nutten's sudden departure. Second-year Jets OG Jonathan Goodwin had been working behind starting Jets OG Brent Smith and Nutten, and Jets backup C J.P. Machado started at right guard in 2001.

The Star-Ledger reports New York Jets OLG Jonathan Goodwin had the most reps in practice he has had all season and is being prepared to replace struggling starter, J.P. Machado. They’ve rotated a bit in games and Goodwin will replace Machado in goal line situations this week.

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports the New York Jets have some questions on the offensive line. The starting right tackle doesn’t have any starts in the league. The two starting left guards are out of the picture so two backups with three games experience between them are vying for the job. At center, the team’s starter won’t be ready until possibly the final preseason game and now there are questions at right guard. Jason Fabini is lining up at LT, LG is being manned by J.P. Machado and rookie Jonathan Goodwin, RG Randy Thomas has shoulder issues, Kareem McKenzie is working in at RT and C Kevin Mawae (shoulder) is out of action. With Mawae out, Machado has been working at center.

According to the Star-Ledger, New York Jets offensive linemen J.P. Machado and Jonathan Goodwin will battle to replace injured Dave Szott (knee) as the team’s starting left guard. The team doesn’t plan to add a veteran if the younger linemen pan out, but would look for a veteran addition if the youngsters can’t handle the job.

The NY Daily News reports New York Jets WR Wayne Chrebet was held out of practice Wednesday to rest. WR/PR Santana Moss (hip flexor) practiced on a limited basis. LT Kareem McKenzie (calf) was injured in practice Tuesday and will miss 3-6 weeks. He has been used lately as an extra TE. If the Jets use a three-tight end formation, they will shift LG Kerry Jenkins to tight end, with backup J.P. Machado stepping in for Jenkins.

Chad Morton (sprained ankle) is expected to return punts against the Saints. He will replace Craig Yeast, who will concentrate on kickoff returns. Starting RG Randy Thomas (sprained ankle) is not expected to play Sunday night. "In my mind, he's out. He's done," coach Herman Edwards said. J.P. Machado will replace Thomas and attempt to block Saints DT La'Roi Glover.
