The Miami Marlins are interested in free-agent SP James Shields (Royals), a source said Tuesday, Nov. 18. Free-agent SP James Shields (Royals) is attracting interest from the Arizona Diamondbacks, but their problem will be creating enough payroll flexibility to sign Shields. Executive Tony La Russa said the D-backs' payroll could change anywhere from $80 million to $110 million in 2015. However, Arizona already has $66.65 million committed for next year. The team would have to clear money to have a shot at Shields, which is why they're considering parting with C Miguel Montero.

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels is once again attracting interest from the Chicago Cubs, who are also interested in free-agent SPs Jon Lester (Athletics) and Max Scherzer (Tigers), according to sources. The Cubs will also likely look into free-agent SP James Shields (Royals), who has ties to new manager Joe Maddon. The Cubs claimed Hamels on revocable waivers in early July before the Phillies pulled him back. Hamels will be paid $96 million over the next four years, meaning he'll come cheaper than the free agent pitchers on the market.
