Padres | James Shields has solid outing Wednesday

Wed, 25 May 2016 18:43:39 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields allowed two runs on five hits over six innings in a no-decision against the San Francisco Giants Wednesday, May 25, with one walk and six strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Shields is 2-2 with a respectable 2.33 ERA during the month of May, with 35 strikeouts over 31 2/3 innings. He will make his next start against the Seattle Mariners Tuesday, May 31.

Padres | James Shields likes facing Giants

Wed, 25 May 2016 12:36:43 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields has a 2.56 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in six career starts against the San Francisco Giants, the team he faces Wednesday, May 25. Shields has allowed three earned runs against them in 13 2/3 innings this season.

Fantasy Tip: Shields has been pretty good this year with a 3.07 ERA in nine starts but has been hurt by a lack of run support (2-6 record). He can be susceptible to the long ball, but pitching in San Fran will limit that today. He's also facing a lineup without Buster Posey and Hunter Pence, so he's attractive as a midrange daily play.

Padres | James Shields continues to struggle

Fri, 20 May 2016 05:55:28 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields allowed three runs, two earned, and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings Thursday, May 19. He struck out seven and walked one in a 3-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Tip: This was the sixth loss for Shields in eight decisions. Shields pitched a decent game but didn't get a win, and those wins have been few and far between this year. He's best left on the bench in most leagues until the slump is over, although Shields pitches well enough to merit consideration in daily leagues depending on the matchup. This was not a favorable matchup at all.

Padres | James Shields tosses seven scoreless

Thu, 12 May 2016 20:13:05 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields tossed seven scoreless innings in a win over the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, May 12, allowing seven hits while walking one and striking out a season-high nine.

Fantasy Tip: After an uneven start to the year, Shields has allowed one run or less in three of his last four starts. He is still a durable innings-eater that provides decent strikeout numbers, and he is a quality No. 4 fantasy starter.

Padres | James Shields roughed up by Mets

Sun, 08 May 2016 06:42:52 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields allowed four runs on five hits and five walks while striking out eight batters during the Padres' 6-3 loss to the New York Mets Saturday, May 7.

Fantasy Tip: While the end result was underwhelming, Shields' strikeouts were way down leading into the start (26 through 39 innings), so his eight punchouts were a step in the right direction. However, the veteran hurler sits with a single win for the campaign, fewer strikeouts than we're accustomed to seeing from him and a mediocre 3.60 ERA. He is a mid-rotation arm for your fantasy club, at best.

Padres | James Shields drops to 0-3

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 00:31:12 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields suffered his third loss of the season Thursday, April 21, in an 11-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Fantasy Tip: To be fair, this wasn't all his fault. Shields allowed three earned runs in six innings, with two walks and five strikeouts. It was the bullpen that did most of the damage. Shields should eventually work his way through the season-starting slump, but be careful of that bullpen.

Padres | Tyson Ross sent to DL

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 14:34:32 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation on Saturday, April 9. James Shields will move up a day and start Sunday, April 10, against the Colorado Rockies.

Fantasy Tip: Ross, who was pummeled for eight runs and nine hits on Opening Day against the Los Angeles Dodgers, said he felt something in his shoulder during his last bullpen session but doesn't consider the injury serious. He's hoping to be ready to take mound as soon as he is eligible (April 20) and owners can use this time to buy low on a high-upside, back-end fantasy starting pitcher.

Padres | James Shields registers quality start

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 22:57:44 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields churned out a quality start Tuesday, April 5, opposite the Los Angeles Dodgers. He lasted six innings and gave up three runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out six.

Fantasy Tip: Overall, it was the type of performance you'd hope for Shields to have to begin the new season, after he was such a disaster in his first year in San Diego in 2015. Other than the fourth inning, in which Los Angeles scored all of its runs, Shields looked like his old vintage self. It's also encouraging that he surrendered no homers after leading the league in that area last season. This first outing may point to a strong bounce-back campaign for the veteran hurler.

Padres | No trade imminent on James Shields front

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 12:12:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Padres SP James Shields is not the subject of any active trade negotiations and no trade is imminent in regards to Shields, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Shields posted a career-best 9.6 K/9 in his first season in the National League, and remaining with the Padres projects favorably. There is bounce-back potential after posting his worst ERA (3.91) and WHIP (1.33) since 2010, too. Shields is a viable option as a mid-rotation arm for your virtual staff.

Padres | James Shields still a trade option

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 10:55:24 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields continues to draw interest on the trade market, and the Baltimore Orioles are one team that is interested. The Boston Red Sox have also talked about Shields.

Fantasy Tip: Shields' homer allowance and high walk rate last year with the Padres were concerning, and a move to the American League East would not look good on him. He could be on the start of a decline, but as long as he remains in Petco Park, Shields isn't bad as your No. 3 fantasy starter.
