Boston Red Sox owner John Henry said he is willing to exceed the $189 million luxury tax threshold for a year. The team currently has approximately $170 million tied up in players who are already under contract or headed to arbitration. If they sign a big-name free-agent pitcher such as James Shields or trade for an ace such as Cole Hamels, they will easily surpass the threshold.

Such a move would cost the team that No. 12 pick in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft, as well as monetary considerations. Free-agent SP James Shields (Royals) is attracting interest from the Arizona Diamondbacks, but their problem will be creating enough payroll flexibility to sign Shields. Executive Tony La Russa said the D-backs' payroll could change anywhere from $80 million to $110 million in 2015. However, Arizona already has $66.65 million committed for next year. The team would have to clear money to have a shot at Shields, which is why they're considering parting with C Miguel Montero.
