Padres | James Shields drops to 0-3

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 00:31:12 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields suffered his third loss of the season Thursday, April 21, in an 11-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Fantasy Tip: To be fair, this wasn't all his fault. Shields allowed three earned runs in six innings, with two walks and five strikeouts. It was the bullpen that did most of the damage. Shields should eventually work his way through the season-starting slump, but be careful of that bullpen.

Padres | Tyson Ross sent to DL

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 14:34:32 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation on Saturday, April 9. James Shields will move up a day and start Sunday, April 10, against the Colorado Rockies.

Fantasy Tip: Ross, who was pummeled for eight runs and nine hits on Opening Day against the Los Angeles Dodgers, said he felt something in his shoulder during his last bullpen session but doesn't consider the injury serious. He's hoping to be ready to take mound as soon as he is eligible (April 20) and owners can use this time to buy low on a high-upside, back-end fantasy starting pitcher.

Padres | James Shields registers quality start

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 22:57:44 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields churned out a quality start Tuesday, April 5, opposite the Los Angeles Dodgers. He lasted six innings and gave up three runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out six.

Fantasy Tip: Overall, it was the type of performance you'd hope for Shields to have to begin the new season, after he was such a disaster in his first year in San Diego in 2015. Other than the fourth inning, in which Los Angeles scored all of its runs, Shields looked like his old vintage self. It's also encouraging that he surrendered no homers after leading the league in that area last season. This first outing may point to a strong bounce-back campaign for the veteran hurler.

Padres | No trade imminent on James Shields front

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 12:12:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Diego Padres SP James Shields is not the subject of any active trade negotiations and no trade is imminent in regards to Shields, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Shields posted a career-best 9.6 K/9 in his first season in the National League, and remaining with the Padres projects favorably. There is bounce-back potential after posting his worst ERA (3.91) and WHIP (1.33) since 2010, too. Shields is a viable option as a mid-rotation arm for your virtual staff.

Padres | James Shields still a trade option

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 10:55:24 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields continues to draw interest on the trade market, and the Baltimore Orioles are one team that is interested. The Boston Red Sox have also talked about Shields.

Fantasy Tip: Shields' homer allowance and high walk rate last year with the Padres were concerning, and a move to the American League East would not look good on him. He could be on the start of a decline, but as long as he remains in Petco Park, Shields isn't bad as your No. 3 fantasy starter.

Orioles | Baltimore eyed James Shields, Matt Kemp

Sun, 14 Feb 2016 15:38:15 -0800

San Diego Padres SP James Shields and OF Matt Kemp were the subject of trade talks between the Padres and Baltimore Orioles, but the two teams were not able to reach an agreement on either player.

Fantasy Tip: Shields and Kemp likely will start the season with the Padres but could be traded during the season. Kemp posted solid numbers and has a good chance to play well again this season if he stays healthy. Shields also posted decent numbers with a 13.7 record and 3.91 ERA. Both players could be middle-round options in deeper leagues.

Padres | James Shields could still be dealt

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 07:34:33 -0800

San Diego Padres SP James Shields is a potential trade candidate, and the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, according to sources. It is believed the Padres would need to retain some salary in any trade.

Fantasy Tip: Shields has made over 30 starts and pitched at least 200 innings in each of the past nine season, which is an incredible feat. He struggled last season with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP, but his 9.6 K/9 was a career best. Look for a modest bounce back from Shields in 2015, especially if he finds a new home in the National League. Stay tuned.

Padres | SD drawing interest in starters

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 10:32:51 -0800

San Diego Padres SPs Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner and James Shields are all drawing significant interest on the trade market, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: All three starters are attractive to other clubs because of the high free-agent prices for starting pitching. As long as they remain in San Diego, they'll all have relatively high prices on the fantasy market because of the pitching-friendly venue they reside in. Stay tuned.

Padres | SD could trade James Shields

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 18:51:10 -0800

The San Diego Padres are reportedly making SP James Shields available to be traded. He is owed $63 million over the final three years of a four-year, $75 million deal, although he can exercise an opt-out clause after the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: In his first year in San Diego, Shields went 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 33 starts, with 216 strikeouts over 202 1/3 innings. The right-hander will turn 34 later this month and he could be dealt if the Padres feel that rebuilding is the way to go. Shields should be drafted in the early rounds of all fantasy formats regardless of where he pitches next season.

Padres | James Shields won't start Sunday

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 17:18:04 -0700

San Diego Padres SP James Shields will not start the team's regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, Oct. 4, according to interim manager Pat Murphy. The team will use a relief pitcher to start the game.

Fantasy Tip: In 33 starts this season, Shields ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) went 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA and struck out 216 batters over 202 1/3 innings. He can be dropped in redraft fantasy leagues.
