St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told SiriusXM's Jim Bowden that he would trade one of his starting pitchers for a "young controllable shortstop", meaning a shortstop with years where the team controls his salary rather than the free-agent market.

Chico Harlan, of The Washington Post, reports Washington Nationals 1B Dmitri Young (back) will likely make the team's roster heading into the regular season, according to two sources. Apparently former general manager Jim Bowden made a promise to Young that he would be on the roster, and the team intends to honor that promise.

Bill Ladson, of MLB.com, reports free-agent SP Odalis Perez (Nationals) plans to wait and test the free-agent market before signing with any team, according to his agent, Martin Arburua. Arburua indicated that Perez is interested in re-signing with the Washington Nationals. The Nationals also have interest in bringing him back, according to general manager Jim Bowden.

Quinn, of ESPN.com, report Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden and special assistant Jose Rijo are being investigated by Major League Baseball and the FBI for their possible roles in a financial scandal involving players from the Dominican Republic, according to sources. The scandal allegedly involves the skimming of signing money allocated for Dominican prospects. Bowden denies being involved in the scandal. "No, I've certainly not gotten that approach from baseball or the FBI. There's obviously no truth to that. As far as the rest of this goes, they're probably better questions for the FBI or baseball," Bowden said. Anyone implicated in this scandal could face felony fraud charges, according to sources.

The Washington Examiner's Matt Palmer and John Keim report the Detroit Tigers are tracking Washington Nationals CL Chad Cordero. A source close to the Tigers said the team already talked to Nationals general nanager Jim Bowden during spring training about Cordero. Look for those talks to heat up if the Nats are out of the race and the Tigers' bullpen is struggling.
