Updating a previous item, Houston Astros president of baseball operations Tal Smith and general manager Ed Wade have both been dismissed by new owner Jim Crane. Dave Gottfried will take over as interim general manager in Houston but is not considered a permanent replacement.

The Houston Astros are expected to announce on Monday, Nov. 28, that general manager Ed Wade and president of baseball operations Tal Smith will not be with the team in 2012. Wade will likely be dismissed while Smith will retire.

Houston Astros general manager Ed Wade wasn't prepared to say whether pitching coach Doug Brocail would return next year. Brocail, who retired after the 2009 season, was working as a special assistant to Wade this year when he took over as pitching coach when Brad Arnsberg was let go in June.

Houston Astros general manager Ed Wade said the team would not pursue free-agent 1B Lance Berkman (Yankees) this offseason, according to Mark Berman of FOX 26. "I heard from (agent) Mike Moye and he inquired about whether we had interest in bringing Lance back and I was candid with him and told him it didn't fit for us," Wade said. "As much as we love and respect Lance and what he's done for our organization, we had these internal conversations in July when we made the decision to go ahead and move him."

The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Astros general manager Ed Wade is not likely to call up many players when rosters expand from 25 to 40 on Sept. 1. "September recalls, I'm a believer that if we're going to bring guys up, they have to have a role here," Wade said. "It's not a reward or a showcase, so I would doubt it. We'll continue to evaluate. I don't expect us to bring a whole lot of guys up. We have a few people coming off the disabled list that will be here. Our numbers probably won't be significant."
