Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty indicated his team may try to lock up a couple of arbitration-eligible players like SP's Mat Latos and Homer Bailey to multi-year contracts. "We've talked to a couple of them," Jocketty said. "Nothing has gotten really serious yet. With it having been Christmas, and a couple of guys were on vacations, we didn't expect to get going until after the holidays."

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty told reporters his offseason tinkering is pretty much finished, but he is on the lookout for a left-handed relief pitcher. "I think right now we've got a very solid club. We've got a good bench, starting pitching and a bullpen. Our everyday lineup is very good. But we never resist an opportunity to improve the club," Jocketty said.

Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker and general manager Walt Jocketty met Friday, Oct. 12, but Baker's contract situation was not resolved. The sides will meet again next week. "There was no breakdown," Jocketty said. "You just don't work out a contract in a few hours. These things take time." Jocketty wouldn't say whether the Reds had offered Baker a contract.

Cincinnati Reds SP Edinson Volquez, who is currently at Triple-A Louisville, has no definite return date, according to general manager Walt Jocketty. "He will return when we are satisfied that he has accomplished and improved on the things we sent him down to work on," Jocketty said. "There is no timetable."

Cincinnati Reds SP Dontrelle Willis (groin) tweaked a groin while in the minor leagues, meaning a possible return to the parent club had to be put on hold. "We talked about it," Reds manager general manager Walt Jocketty said. "But he tweaked a groin the other day. It didn't make sense to bring him up." Willis will probably not go on the disabled list, but he'll miss his next start.
