Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said he is open to making a big trade this season, but he added that the team wouldn't include any young impact players in a deal. "I'm always open to a big (trade) if there's one out there," Melvin said. "We're not going to deal the young impact player to help our big club now. It's going to be tough to do that. I think we do have a lot of players in our system that will play in the big leagues."

Melvin added that the trade market for first basemen was very thin this offseason, hinting that he had had discussions with the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers but that they were unwilling to make moves.

The Milwaukee Brewers agreed to contact extensions for general manager Doug Melvin and manager Ron Roenicke Tuesday, May 8. Melvin will be extended through the 2015 season, while Roenicke's new deal takes him through the 2014 season but includes a team option for the 2015 season. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

General manager Doug Melvin says he's going to look at less expensive alternatives in C prospects Jonathan Lucroy, Angel Salome and George Kottaras, who recently was claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.
