He replaces Scott Servais, who left early last month to be an assistant GM for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Purpura received full backing from Astros owner Drayton McLane to seek other employment. He will still be paid by the team through 2008.

The GM said the club has both made and received trade proposals. "It's back and forth," said Purpura, who is interested in players who can help his club this year and in 2008. However, the GM also said there wasn't any urgency on the club's part to trade a particular player away. "It's a matter of what value can you get for the players you have, particularly players you have control over for more than a year," said Purpura.
