Rangers | New development director hired

The monthlong search for a new Texas Rangers senior director of player development ended Friday, Dec. 2, when the Rangers hired former Houston Astros general manager Tim Purpura. He replaces Scott Servais, who left early last month to be an assistant GM for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Astros | Former GM accepts minor-league exec position

The Houston Chronicle's Jose De Jesus Ortiz reports former Houston Astros general manager Tim Purpura has accepted a job as executive vice president of Minor League Baseball. Purpura received full backing from Astros owner Drayton McLane to seek other employment. He will still be paid by the team through 2008.

Astros | Team active in trade talks, but no deals imminent

Alyson Footer, of Houston.Astros.MLB.com, reports the Houston Astros have been active in trade talks with the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaching, but no deals appear to be imminent, according to Astros general manager Tim Purpura. The GM said the club has both made and received trade proposals. "It's back and forth," said Purpura, who is interested in players who can help his club this year and in 2008. However, the GM also said there wasn't any urgency on the club's part to trade a particular player away. "It's a matter of what value can you get for the players you have, particularly players you have control over for more than a year," said Purpura.

The Houston Chronicle reports Houston Astros manager Phil Garner was absent from workouts Feb. 19, the second day in a row he has missed and one day after his lone daughter Bethany was married at nearby Walt Disney World. General manager Tim Purpura said Garner was tied up helping friends and family members leave the Orlando area and would return Feb. 20. Coach Cecil Cooper ran practice.
