Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro was promoted from general manager to team president and handed off GM duties to Chris Antonetti, as expected, Monday, Oct. 4, MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince reports. Director of baseball operations Mike Chernoff was promoted to assistant general manager.

Indians.MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince reports the Cleveland Indians have called a press conference to announce general manager Mark Shapiro will be promoted to the role of team president. Vice president of baseball operations and assistant general manager Chris Antonetti will replace Shapiro as general manager. The moves are expected to take place after the 2010 season.

The Detroit News reports Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland, along with fellow veteran managers Tony La Russa (Cardinals), Mike Scioscia (Angels) and Joe Torre (Dodgers), has been named to a committee charged with recommending ways to improve Major League Baseball. Commissioner Bud Selig appointed the members to the panel, which also includes Baltimore Orioles president Andy MacPhail, Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro, Atlanta Braves president John Schuerzholz, former Minnesota Twins GM Terry Ryan, Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, political columnist George Will and the owners for four teams. Among the issues the panel is expected to address: instant replay, scheduling and pace of the game.

Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said the jobs of manager Eric Wedge and his coaching staff are safe for the remainder of the season, according to The Associated Press. "As I've said all along, the responsibility for the disappointments of this season don't rest on one person," Shapiro said. "The responsibility is spread equally throughout the players, the front office, Eric and his staff. I thought it was important for the second half to remove a potential distraction that exists from that speculation."

Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said SP Anthony Reyes (elbow) was throwing at 70 percent in the Arizona Instructional League, according to Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. He missed the final month of the 2008 season due to right elbow soreness.

Updating previous reports, The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Bill Lubinger reports Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said DH Travis Hafner (shoulder) is living in Cleveland and working out daily at Progressive Field. "At most, he could be a week or two behind at Spring Training but should be healthy for the season opener," Shapiro said.

Paul Hoynes, of The Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Indians SS Jhonny Peralta (hand) is expected to recover after bruising his hand Wednesday, Dec. 17, while playing in the Dominican Republic Winter League. He is expected to be back in the lineup Friday, Dec. 19. The Indians are unsure if they will move Peralta to third base next season, which would then allow 2B Asdrubal Cabrera to play shortstop, according to general manager Mark Shapiro. Peralta is batting .328 (22-for-67) with four doubles, one home run and 10 RBIs in 17 games in winter ball. According to Shapiro, Peralta's winter ball season will be over in a few days.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Paul Hoynes reports the Cleveland Indians met with free-agent SP CC Sabathia's (Brewers) agents Tuesday, Nov. 4, in what sounded like a fond farewell. Sabathia is likely way out of the team's price range. "We were just touching base," said general manager Mark Shapiro. "We talked about potential scenarios that could develop and re-affirmed our interest."
