Indians.MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince reports the Cleveland Indians have called a press conference to announce general manager Mark Shapiro will be promoted to the role of team president. Vice president of baseball operations and assistant general manager Chris Antonetti will replace Shapiro as general manager. The moves are expected to take place after the 2010 season.

The Detroit News reports Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland, along with fellow veteran managers Tony La Russa (Cardinals), Mike Scioscia (Angels) and Joe Torre (Dodgers), has been named to a committee charged with recommending ways to improve Major League Baseball. Commissioner Bud Selig appointed the members to the panel, which also includes Baltimore Orioles president Andy MacPhail, Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro, Atlanta Braves president John Schuerzholz, former Minnesota Twins GM Terry Ryan, Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, political columnist George Will and the owners for four teams. Among the issues the panel is expected to address: instant replay, scheduling and pace of the game.

Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said the jobs of manager Eric Wedge and his coaching staff are safe for the remainder of the season, according to The Associated Press. "As I've said all along, the responsibility for the disappointments of this season don't rest on one person," Shapiro said. "The responsibility is spread equally throughout the players, the front office, Eric and his staff. I thought it was important for the second half to remove a potential distraction that exists from that speculation."
