Houston Astros manager Bradley Mills kept the struggling OF J.D. Martinez out of the lineup Wednesday, May 9, and he said he might give Martinez a few more days off. The outfielder has just one hit over his past 30 at-bats. "It's not a punishment," Mills said. "I'm just going to give him a couple of days. This will get me a chance to get (OF Justin Maxwell) some at-bats, and (OF Travis Buck has) gotten a few at-bats."

Updating a previous item, Houston Astros OF Jordan Schafer (back) left the game early Wednesday, May 2, with lower back tightness. He was replaced by OF Justin Maxwell. Schafer went 0-for-2 with two walks before leaving, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 24 straight games.

Houston Astros OF Jordan Schafer (illness) was out of the lineup Tuesday, April 17, against the Washington Nationals due to a cold. OF Justin Maxwell made the start in Schafer's absence. Schafer did appear as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning and he collected a bunt single.

The New York Yankees signed 19 players to one-year contracts for the 2012 season Wednesday, March 7. The players signed were Ps Cory Wade, Michael Pineda, David Phelps, Ivan Nova, D.J. Mitchell, Brad Meyers, George Kontos, Cesar Cabral and Dellin Betances, Cs Austin Romine and Francisco Cervelli, INFs Ramiro Pena, Eduardo Nunez, Brandon Laird, Corban Joseph and David Adams and OFs Melky Mesa, Justin Maxwell and Zoilo Almonte. Financial terms weren't given.

New York Yankees OF Greg Golson has been sent down to the minor leagues, which bodes well for the status of either OF Curtis Granderson (oblique) or OF Justin Maxwell, according to Ben Shpigel of The New York Times. Maxwell would serve as the team's fourth outfielder if Granderson has to start the season on the disabled list.
