Nationals | Jonathan Papelbon stays perfect

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 18:15:12 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Jonathan Papelbon worked a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in his team debut Thursday, July 30, and he has converted all 18 of his save chances this year.

Fantasy Tip: Washington traded for Papelbon with the intent to use him as the closer, so unless he falters in a big way, he should remain in the role the rest of the way.

Nationals | Jonathan Papelbon to close for Nats

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 09:41:59 -0700

Washington Nationals new RP Jonathan Papelbon will serve as the team's new closer after Washington traded for him Tuesday, July 28. RP Drew Storen, the previous closer, will move into an eighth-inning setup role. Papelbon was Philadelphia's career saves leader with 123 and is 17-for-17 in save chances in 2015. Papelbon wouldn't accept a trade to the Nationals unless he would remain a closer. Papelbon's $13 million option for 2016 becomes a guaranteed $11 million salary as part of the trade, and $3 million will be deferred, according to a major league source. Washington will pay Papelbon the prorated minimum of $507,500 for the rest of the year. Papelbon is expected to join his new team Wednesday, July 29.

Fantasy Tip: Papelbon's fantasy value increases slightly now that he's expected to receive more save chances for a contending club. Storen's value obviously takes a huge hit without ninth-inning duties, although he could see the occasional save chance when Papelbon is rested. In shallow leagues, without the prospect for saves, Storen isn't worth a roster spot.

Phillies | Philadelphia trades Jonathan Papelbon

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 15:34:18 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon was traded to the Washington Nationals Tuesday, July 28, in exchange for P Nick Pivetta, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Ken Giles is the most likely candidate to take over as the closer for the Phillies, which will help his fantasy value. Owners should look to add Giles if he is available in their leagues.

Nationals | Nats acquire Jonathan Papelbon

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 15:32:48 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon was acquired by the Washington Nationals Tuesday, July 28, in exchange for P Nick Pivetta, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Papelbon likely will become the Nationals' new closer if he agreed to the trade. Papelbon should receive more save opportunities with Washington, which will increase his value. Drew Storen will lose a lot of value since he will no longer be the closer but still has value in leagues that count holds as a category.

Nationals | Nats close to landing Jonathan Papelbon

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 14:59:08 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon is close to being traded to the Washington Nationals Tuesday, July 28, in exchange for a minor league pitcher, according to sources. Papelbon is expected to become the Nationals' new closer, pushing current closer Drew Storen into a setup role. The teams are still working through a number of "hurdles" before the deal is complete. Papelbon can block a trade to Washington, so he wants his $13 million vesting option to be guaranteed in order to approve the deal.

Fantasy Tip: The deal is expected to completed shortly, so stay tuned. Papelbon's fantasy value will increase slightly now that he's expected to have more closing opportunities with a contending club. Storen's value takes the biggest hit with a move to a setup role, and he can be dropped in shallow leagues without any save chances. Ken Giles should be picked up if he's available, as he's expected to move into the closer role in Philly with Papelbon gone.

Nationals | Jonathan Papelbon to Nats progressing

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 08:31:45 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon is the subject of talks with the Washington Nationals that are progressing. Papelbon said he will only waive his no-trade clause if he goes to a team to serve as the closer.

Fantasy Tip: Papelbon has been brilliant despite playing on a poor team in a hitter's park. His value could increase with the move to the Nats in a situation that would likely yield more save chances.

Nationals | WAS interested in Jonathan Papelbon

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 10:05:02 -0700

The Washington Nationals have expressed interest in trading for Philadelphia Phillies CL Jonathan Papelbon, according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Tip: Despite Papelbon's desire to be traded to a contender, he will not approve a trade to a team that won't use him as a closer. One reason for this is because a $13 million vesting option for the 2016 season will kick in if Papelbon finishes at least 14 more games in 2015. The Nats are reluctant to take on a significant amount of payroll during the season, so expect the Phils to cover a major part of his salary if a deal gets done. Papelbon is 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA through 37 games and has converted all 17 of his save opportunities this year.

Phillies | Jonathan Papelbon wants to be a closer

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 07:34:38 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon said he wants to remain a closer and will not accept a trade if he is not a closer with his new team.

Fantasy Tip: Papelbon is a nice trade target for some teams but his unwillingness to be a setup man could cut into his possible destinations. He has recorded 17 saves and has a 1.59 ERA this season but would lose a lot of fantasy value if he is not a closer after the trade deadline.

Phillies | Jonathan Papelbon records save

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 18:54:05 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon earned his 17th save in as many opportunities against the Chicago Cubs Friday, July 24.

Fantasy Tip: Papelbon has a 0.98 WHIP and 1.59 ERA through 37 games, with 40 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings. Despite his desire to be traded to a contender, the Phils may experience difficulty moving him because of his contract.

Phillies | Jonathan Papelbon gets the win

Wed, 22 Jul 2015 18:10:05 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon pitched two scoreless innings to notch the win Wednesday, July 22, against the Tampa Bay Rays. With the non-waiver trade deadline coming up July 31, and the Phillies set for an extended road trip, Papelbon may have pitched his final game in Philadelphia.

Fantasy Tip: Papelbon has made his desire to be traded to a contending team public on several occasions. He has a 1.72 ERA on the season, but he also has a 3.18 xFIP. Even with the regression coming, Papelbon should improve on his saves total if dealt to a quality team.
