The Philadelphia Phillies have RP Jonathan Papelbon on the trade block. He's due $13 million next season, $13 million in 2015 and has a $13 million vesting option for the 2016 season.

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon is unlikely to be traded by the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. "I can't imagine anyone taking that contract of his and giving Philadelphia pieces back," one rival executive said, basically echoing the sentiments of several who were asked about Papelbon. Papelbon's name isn't being thrown around in trade talks right now. He's interested in going back to the Boston Red Sox, but the BoSox don't seem interested. Also, he's gained a reputation for not fitting well in the clubhouse, which won't help his trade value.

The Philadelphia Phillies reportedly are willing to trade RP Jonathan Papelbon before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The Phillies lost their eighth straight game Sunday, July 28, to fall a season-worst seven games under .500 and appear to be sellers at the deadline. Papelbon said he wants to stay in Philadelphia.

The Detroit Tigers are not searching for a closer on the trade market thanks to the success of RP Joaquin Benoit. Instead, they're looking for a pitcher to bolster their bullpen in the seventh or eighth innings. The Tigers don't have many options, though, and they're no longer looking at Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon. Detroit has already been shot down on Baltimore Orioles RP Francisco Rodriguez, Miami Marlins RP Steve Cishek, Minnesota Twins RP Glen Perkins and Seattle Mariners RP Oliver Perez.
Fantasy Tip: This cements Benoit's value as Detroit's unquestioned closer, and he is in no current danger of getting booted from the ninth.

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the team isn't inclined to take on salary to facilitate trades of SP Cliff Lee or CL Jonathan Papelbon.

Philadelphia Phillies RP Mike Adams (shoulder) was diagnosed with three tears in his shoulder - two to his labrum and one in his rotator cuff - and he could need surgery that would likely keep him out for the rest of the year. Adams hasn't decided on surgery yet, but either way, he probably won't pitch again this season. "It's not going to heal," Adams said. "Maybe I can do some stuff to get the other muscles to take over and strengthen and hold everything else intact." If he doesn't have surgery, he'll need four to six weeks of rehab followed by a throwing program of at least six weeks.
Fantasy Tip: You can go ahead and drop Adams if you own him in cavernous mixed or NL-only leagues. In the event Jonathan Papelbon is traded this summer, Antonio Bastardo now looks like the overwhelming option to take over the closing duties.

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. insists that he's not looking to trade SP Cliff Lee or RP Jonathan Papelbon as the trade deadline approaches. "Absolutely not, because these are guys I'd be better off having on my club than not," Amaro said. "Who am I going to replace these guys with to win a championship? These are championship-caliber players. If we think about moving these guys, then I better be getting someone of better or equal value and I just don't see that happening." 2B Chase Utley, 3B Michael Young and C Carlos Ruiz are all in the final year of their contracts and are candidates to be moved, as well.
Fantasy Tip: Lee and Papelbon's values wouldn't change all that much if they were dealt; they're both top-notch pitchers. The bigger question would be who might close in Philly if Papelbon leaves. Mike Adams and Antonio Bastardo would be the primary candidates, but a committee setup would be very possible.

Despite mixed reports over whether Philadelphia Phillies SP Cliff Lee wants to stay in town, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said he has "no desire" to trade Lee, SP Cole Hamels or RP Jonathan Papelbon. Amaro, however, did say he empathized with Lee's frustration, which partially stems from the offense's struggles to support his starts.
Fantasy Tip: Lee should be considered a top-flight fantasy option no matter where he pitches, but any inkling that he'd go to an AL team would cause a FAAB explosion in single-universe leagues.

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon (stomach) was unable to pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday, June 2, because of a stomach illness. RP Antonio Bastardo was called upon to record the save.

Philadelphia Phillies RP Mike Adams (back) said he's still dealing with back problems Wednesday, May 15, and he was unavailable to throw Tuesday, May 14, and said his back felt "the same" Wednesday. He began having back spasms Sunday, May 12. "I'm playing it day by day and seeing how it progresses," Adams said. He's hoping he'll be ready to pitch this weekend.
Fantasy Tip: The Phils took a risk signing Adams to a hefty contract in the offseason after he underwent surgery to fix Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in his shoulder. Adams hasn't been the same since, and he hasn't thrown in five days. He's not nearly as effective as he used to be as a setup man with the San Diego Padres, and he's won't be challenging Jonathan Papelbon any time soon for ninth-inning duties.
