New York Mets SP Jon Niese (shoulder) allowed six hits and four runs in two innings Monday, March 11, and his velocity was in the upper-80s. However, he said his velocity should increase as he cleans up his mechanics. "I looked up. I hit 89 mph," Niese said. "I don't know if that's down, for the first outing. It took a little while for me to get going, get back into the competition. But I felt good. I kind of started off slow and was able to gradually build up." He'll make three more spring starts before going on opening day, and he thinks there is enough time to get ready.

New York Mets SP Jon Niese's (shoulder) MRI results came back clean, and he'll resume throwing in a couple of days. "I wanted to keep it quiet. It's just a precautionary thing to make sure it's not worse from last year," Niese said. "I just want peace of mind." Niese had a partial tear of his rotator cuff last season but didn't undergo surgery.
Fantasy Tip: Niese owners can breathe a sigh of relief, for now. As long as he doesn't have any setbacks this spring, he should be fine to make his opening day start. His previous shoulder issues have to remain in the back of your head, however.

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Jon Niese's (shoulder) pain in his left shoulder is in a different part of his shoulder than what he experienced last year when he suffered a partially torn left rotator cuff. He first reported pain early in camp, and the team limited him to long toss. "He just said he's got a little discomfort in there," manager Terry Collins said, "so we're going to have a look."
Fantasy Tip: This can't be good news for Niese, who dealt with shoulder problems last season. Keep an eye on this one. If Niese won't be ready for opening day, John Lannan, Noah Syndergaard or Rafael Montero could sneak into the rotation. Syndergaard has the most upside of the bunch, with Montero not far behind.
