Pirates | Jon Niese runs record to 3-0

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 23:32:07 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed four earned runs, 10 hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings in a win Friday, April 22, against the Arizona Diamondbacks, running his record to 3-0.

Fantasy Tip: Niese received plenty of run support, as he wasn't particularly sharp in this outing. His strikeouts have decreased in each of his past three starts, but he remains a decent fantasy option in NL-only leagues, deeper mixed formats and DFS play due to solid run support from his offense.

Pirates | Jon Niese logs quality start in win

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 14:09:10 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese picked up his first win with his new team Monday, April 11, against the Detroit Tigers. He logged six innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits, including two home runs. The left-hander also walked one and struck out five.

Fantasy Tip: Nothing special here from Niese, but owners should be willing to take this kind of outing from the veteran southpaw with his best days behind him. It also goes down as a quality start, which is especially impressive considering it came against a tough Tigers lineup on the road. There's a chance he develops into a decent NL-only option, and may have potential in deep mixed leagues if he gets into a groove.

Pirates | Jon Niese records seven strikeouts

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 21:01:17 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed five runs - four earned - and one walk with seven strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision Tuesday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: The strikeout totals were good, but fantasy owners will obviously want to see better results in the earned runs category. He isn't a bad NL-only and deeper mixed fantasy option pitching for the contending Bucs, but hopefully you're not expecting him to help you positively in the ERA category in rotisserie formats.

Pirates | Jon Niese not looking good

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 13:02:49 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed four runs on two hits and also walked two in three innings in a spring game Tuesday, March 8. He's now allowed eight runs in five innings in two Grapefruit League starts.

Fantasy Tip: Niese is very hittable these days and despite respectable control, doesn't have any fantasy upside, even with his move to Pittsburgh in a guaranteed starting role. Stay away from him in mixed leagues.

Pirates | Jon Niese may get extra help

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:01:19 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese may get some extra help from pitching coach Ray Searage before the season starts. He has worked with pitchers like SP Francisco Liriano, J.A. Happ and Edinson Volquez.

Fantasy Tip: Those pitchers have had solid seasons when in Pittsburgh, so the thinking is Niese could benefit from Searage's help. He is targeted as the No. 3 starter in Pittsburgh, so he will likely go in the middle of NL drafts and in later rounds in mixed leagues.

Pirates | Jon Niese to be No. 3 starter

Tue, 12 Jan 2016 15:22:13 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese, who went 9-10 with a 4.13 ERA in 33 outings for the New York Mets last year, is expected to fill the No. 3 starting pitcher spot for Pittsburgh.

Fantasy Tip: Niese fell victim to the Mets young dominant starters making the transition to the majors last year and finding immediate success. His strikeouts per nine innings dropped to under 6.0 last year, which will make him unattractive to most fantasy owners. However, he's an extreme ground-ball pitcher that could find success with Pittsburgh in a new opportunity. But he's more of a single-universe commodity to begin the year.

Pirates | Jon Niese headed to Pittsburgh

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 12:38:41 -0800

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired SP Jon Niese from the Pittsburgh Pirates Wednesday, Dec. 9, in exchange for 2B Neil Walker.

Fantasy Tip: Niese was a swing man for the Mets last year as they brought in their impressive youngsters to the rotation. He figures to be much of the same for the Bucs, although he might have a better shot sticking in the rotation. He doesn't do anything particularly well for fantasy owners, so he's more of an NL-only target for depth. The departure of Walker may allow both Jung Ho Kang and Jordy Mercer to play together in the middle infield.

Mets | Neil Walker traded to Mets

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 12:33:02 -0800

The New York Mets agreed to acquire Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Neil Walker in exchange for SP Jon Niese Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Fantasy Tip: The acquisition of Walker assures that Daniel Murphy won't return to Flushing. Walker has some pop and can approach 15 home runs if he stays healthy. He won't offer his fantasy owners much else and is more of a midrange second base target on draft day. The departure of Niese could spur the Mets to attempt re-signing Bartolo Colon.

Mets | Jon Niese expendable?

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 11:11:24 -0800

The New York Mets have discussed trading SP Jon Niese to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for 2B Neil Walker, according to a baseball source. Niese had a 4.13 ERA in 176 2/3 innings last season.

Fantasy Tip: Niese is a back-of-the-rotation arm that would mainly be a commodity in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues. Walker seems destined to be traded this winter and is more of a midrange fantasy second baseman with some intriguing power.

Mets | Jon Niese heads to bullpen

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 04:42:15 -0700

New York Mets SP Jon Niese has volunteered to work out of the bullpen the rest of the season despite 29 starts in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Niese ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) loses his FantasyScore value as relievers are not used, but he could gain some eligibility in other leagues depending on how many games he pitches in the pen.
