New York Mets SP Jon Niese (elbow) deemed himself "completely normal" after he threw 80 pitches in a minor league game Tuesday, April 1, and he expects to throw as many as 95 pitches in his season debut against the Cincinnati Reds Sunday, April 6. Niese is not concerned that his arm injuries that he dealt with this spring will resurface.

New York Mets SP Jon Niese (elbow) threw five innings in a simulated game Tuesday, April 1. Niese tossed 76 pitches in the session.
Fantasy Tip: This was Niese's final test before being cleared to make his season debut later this week. If he doesn't have a setback before then, get ready to put him in your starting lineups.

If New York Mets SP Jon Niese (elbow) is unable to make his scheduled start against the Cincinnati Reds Sunday, April 6, SP Daisuke Matsuzaka could be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to make the start.
Fantasy Tip: Matsuzaka pitched well during spring training, allowing nine runs (eight earned) and 25 hits over 23 1/3 innings in six starts, with four walks and 25 strikeouts. However, he lost the competition for the No. 5 spot in the rotation to Jenrry Mejia. That being said, he should be back in the majors sooner rather than later and could be worth a gamble in NL-only leagues.

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Jon Niese (elbow) threw 57 pitches in a scoreless minor league outing Thursday, March 27, and he sat at 87-89 mph with his fastball and topped out at 92 mph. He expects to throw in another minor league game in five days and increase his workload. Niese said he felt amazing during the outing.

New York Mets SP Jon Niese (elbow) was pain-free in his outing in a minor league game Thursday, March 27.
Fantasy Tip: Niese isn't expected to miss any regular season starts, but some elbow and shoulder scares this spring have scared many off. If he bounces back and puts the arm issues behind him, he is a nice addition off the waiver wire if he wasn't drafted in your league.

New York Mets SP Jon Niese (elbow) threw a 45-pitch bullpen session Monday, March 24, his first since having an MRI exam on his sore left elbow last week. Niese said he felt great during the session and was pain-free. He'll throw 55 to 60 pitches again Thursday, March 27, in a minor league game. Niese is on track to make his season debut April 6 after opening the year on the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: It's another good step for Niese. You can draft him for an extremely cheap price thanks to all the arm woes he's had this spring.

New York Mets SP Jon Niese (elbow) will start the season on the disabled list, but he will pitch during the team's first home stand, according to a source. Niese received a cortisone shot in his left elbow Monday, March 17. The team will be allowed to carry an extra bench player while Niese is on the DL. He'll work with a weighted ball Thursday, March 20, and is set to resume throwing off a mound Monday, March 24.
Fantasy Tip: Niese is a risky selection even if he's rounding out your fantasy rotation at the back end. You can get him extremely cheap, though, and he won't miss regular season starts.

New York Mets SP Jon Niese (elbow) has been cleared to resume throwing after an exam in New York, according to multiple sources with ties to the team. He underwent an MRI exam and was looked at by Dr. David Altchek. Niese received a cortisone injection to reduce swelling but was told his ligament is completely intact. He'll throw Wednesday, March 19. He's still expected to begin the season on the disabled list. The club won't need a fifth starter until April 6.
Fantasy Tip: This is great news for those who already own Niese. He may wind up missing only one or two starts if he ramps his throwing schedule back up and doesn't encounter any setbacks. Still, drafting him is rather risky now.
