Dodgers | Adrian Gonzalez gets night off

Tue, 12 Aug 2014 12:37:49 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez (rest) is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Aug. 12, against the Atlanta Braves. OF Scott Van Slyke is batting fourth and playing first base.

Fantasy Tip: Mike Minor has struggled mightily (7.34 ERA) over his last seven starts, which makes Van Slyke an excellent target in daily games. Gonzalez has five consecutive multi-hit games, so sitting against the struggling Minor is a bit of a surprise, although it is a lefty-lefty matchup.

Dodgers | Carl Crawford becoming everyday LF

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 15:39:32 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Carl Crawford is back in left field over OF Andre Ethier Monday, Aug. 11. Ethier has started only three of the team's last 17 games. However Crawford has hit just .196 during that stretch. "Carl, before he got hurt, was probably swinging the bat better than anyone we had," manager Don Mattingly said. "I feel like Carl's going to get back to that." Mattingly also prefers Crawford's speed and versatility over Ethier. OF Scott Van Slyke has been drawing most of the starts in left field when the team faces a left-hander.

Fantasy Tip: More playing time for Crawford will make him appeal to those in deep mixed leagues, but not if he continues to stink it up at the plate. Crawford definitely is more intriguing because of his speed than Ethier. Ethier should only be owned in NL-only leagues right now.

Dodgers | Three players sitting Saturday

Sat, 02 Aug 2014 17:15:48 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez (knee), OF Yasiel Puig (hamstring) and C A.J. Ellis (knee) will not be in the lineup Saturday, Aug. 2, but manager Don Mattingly said all three players could pinch hit in an emergency situation. 2B Justin Turner will make his first start of the year at first base in place of Gonzalez, 1B Scott Van Slyke will replace Puig in the outfield, and C Drew Butera will start for Ellis.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez, Puig and Ellis should all be considered day-to-day at this point, but make sure to remove all three from daily lineups.

Dodgers | Carl Crawford on lineup card, not starting

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 15:42:29 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Carl Crawford (ankle) is listed as a reserve on the lineup card Thursday, July 10, against the San Diego Padres.

Fantasy Tip: Expect the Dodgers to activate Crawford from the disabled list before tonight's game. Crawford will likely be eased back into playing time, but he was scorching hot before his injury. He is worth considering in all formats. His activation will leave the Dodgers' outfield stocked with options. Scott Van Slyke and Andre Either are likely to see the least playing time going forward. To a lesser degree, Matt Kemp will also see less playing time.

Dodgers | Scott Van Slyke playing important role

Tue, 10 Jun 2014 09:48:09 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Scott Van Slyke hit two home runs in the team's victory Monday, June 9, and currently leads the team's outfielders with a 1.060 OPS. Van Slyke has played in a very limited role off the bench for the Dodgers, often matching up against left-handed hitters. Eleven of his 20 hits have gone for extra-base hits, and he has walked 18 times in 40 games. Manager Don Mattingly said he is considering platooning Van Slyke with OF Andre Ethier in center field.

Fantasy Tip: Van Slyke's playing time is too thin and unpredictable to make him a fixture in a standard mixed league. But he should be owned in NL-only leagues and considered in a deep enough mixed league, especially if he starts platooning in center with Ethier.

Dodgers | Won't call up Joc Pederson yet

Thu, 29 May 2014 05:45:43 -0700

The Los Angeles Dodgers refuse to call up OF Joc Pederson until an everyday lineup spot opens up. "We don't feel like it's the right time right now for Joc," said manager Don Mattingly.

Fantasy Tip: After Carl Crawford's ankle injury, they'll keep rolling with Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier, with a sprinkle of Scott Van Slyke, instead. Pederson is having an MVP-like year for Class AAA Albuquerque, so whenever he does come up, he'll be an instant fantasy add.

Dodgers | Matt Kemp has starting spot in CF

Fri, 09 May 2014 14:41:46 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers OF Matt Kemp has taken hold of the full-time starting duties in center field, according to skipper Don Mattingly. That leaves OFs Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier to fight for playing time in left field, with OF Scott Van Slyke a consideration against left-handed pitching. "Yasiel has established himself. 'Dre and Carl are fighting for playing time. Yasiel, he's turned into an RBI guy. He's more patient and getting better pitches to hit. In the long run, he's a 3-4-5 guy. He's showing he's that (Mike) Trout guy. He's shown he's moving in that direction," Mattingly said.

Fantasy Tip: Kemp should be owned in all leagues, but his owners may have been hesitant before to start him because of his slow start and inconsistent playing time. Faith in Kemp is renewed, and hopefully for his owners, it'll mean better production at the plate.

Dodgers | OF rotation continues

Fri, 25 Apr 2014 09:32:38 -0700

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has struggled with lineup decisions while trying to juggle the playing time of his outfielders between OFs Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and Carl Crawford. Mattingly has often gone with statistical matchup history or righty/lefty preference when making the lineup. Puig is hitting .269, Kemp .218, Crawford .217 and Ethier .206, and Mattingly is unsure if that's the result of irregular playing time. He said "there will come a day" when there's "just a clearer picture" on who will start and who won't. OF Scott Van Slyke is also on roster and has hit .444 against lefties.

Fantasy Tip: If you own any of these outfielders, continue to check in daily to see if they are in the starting lineup. Ethier figured to be the odd-man out when Kemp returned from the disabled list, and he still might if the Dodgers decide to keep Kemp in there regularly. The other obvious solution would be for the team to trade one of the outfielders.
