The Canadian Press reports NFL free agent QB Jesse Palmer (49ers) signed a practice roster contract with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL. He then worked out with his new team Monday, Sept. 11, about two weeks after getting cut by the San Francisco 49ers.

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said the team could decide to keep four quarterbacks on the roster if QB Cody Pickett helps in a number of different areas. QB Jesse Palmer would be the No. 4 quarterback.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports San Francisco 49ers QB Ken Dorsey will have to fight hard in training camp to make the team's final roster. Dorsey will need to outplay QB Jesse Palmer, QB Cody Pickett and possibly a veteran acquisition to remain with the team. Head coach Mike Nolan repeatedly has stated that he would like to add an experienced quarterback who could mentor former first overall pick, QB Alex D. Smith.

The Associated Press reports the battle for the New York Giants No. 3 quarterback spot continued Thursday, Sept. 1, between QBs Jared Lorenzen and Jesse Palmer as the Giants defeated the New England Patriots 27-3. Lorenzen played the final series of the first half and the third quarter before Palmer took over early in the fourth quarter. Lorenzen went 5-for-13 for 54 yards and a 26-yard touchdown pass. Lorenzen also threw an interception. Palmer entered with 13:24 left in the game and completed his only pass, a 46-yard strike to WR Jamaar Taylor. Head coach Tom Coughlin wouldn't tip his hand about how he's leaning. Lorenzen "had good poise. He ran his team well," the head coach said. And Palmer "had a real nice (throw) off of play action."

Arthur Staple, of Newsday, reports New York Giants QB Jesse Palmer got precious few snaps during practice Tuesday, Aug. 16, having dropped from second-unit duty to spending time as a scout-team safety while QB Jared Lorenzen picked up the slack. Palmer, in the doghouse for the interception he threw last weekend in Cleveland, had the best pass of the morning practice, hitting WR Willie Ponder on a deep corner route for a score.

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports the New York Giants No. 2 quarterback job remains up for grabs between QBs Jesse Palmer and Tim Hasselbeck. Palmer completed two of three passes in a limited stint during the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 13, but the one he didn't hit was a bad interception that angered head coach Tom Coughlin. Hasselbeck took over late in the third quarter and completed eight of 15 passes for 87 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown to WR Ataveus Cash. He also threw an interception.
