Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal out of spotlight

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 07:48:42 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal will not be used in high-leverage situations, according to manager Mike Matheny. RP Jonathan Broxton and RP Matthew Bowman could be used in such situations for now.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal has always been a closer that keeps you on the edge of your seat before ultimately nailing down the save. However, something is different this season. His offspeed stuff and fastball command haven't been good. Hitters have looked for the fastball and made hard contact. He has a 5.46 ERA, a 1.98 WHIP and 45 K's in 31 1/3 innings. He has only allowed three homers, which signals he may not be far off. However, his changeup and/or curveball have to return for him to be successful. That may not happen this season. It's tough to drop a guy with a 12.93 K/9, a career high, so stash him and hope he finds what he's lacking. Broxton and Bowman offer little in fantasy for now.

Cardinals | Seung-Hwan Oh the new closer?

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 10:14:21 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Seung-Hwan Oh was in line to serve as the closer Sunday, June 26, and Oh is expected to have the first shot at the ninth-inning role now, in the opinion of the St. Louis Dispatch's Derrick Goold. "I'd imagine he gets the first crack at closing. They'll look at matchups. It seems to be trending towards Oh getting the first crack… and if he does in the ninth what he's been doing in the eighth, it's hard to imagine (RPs Kevin Siegrist or Jonathan Broxton getting the save opportunities unless Oh falters)," Goold said.

Fantasy Tip: For now, Trevor Rosenthal will work in less stressful situations in middle relief. He still has the most strikeout upside, though, and should remain stashed in most formats. Oh should be your first target off the waiver wire if he's still available in your league.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal out as closer

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 18:54:24 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal is out as closer and will be used in a different role going forward, manager Mike Matheny said Saturday, June 25. RP Seung-Hwan Oh, RP Kevin Siegrist and RP Jonathan Broxton will all see save chances, according to Matheny.

Fantasy Tip: Oh has been outstanding this year and is your best bet if you are hunting for saves. However, Siegrist and Broxton could also be worth speculative adds in what is likely to be a messy situation for fantasy owners to deal with.

Cardinals | Jonathan Broxton sheds 20 pounds

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 06:16:03 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals RP Jonathan Broxton dropped 20 pounds during the offseason. Manager Mike Matheny said bringing Broxton back was important to take some of the load off of RP Trevor Rosenthal.

Fantasy Tip: Broxton doesn't have the same upper-90's velocity he had earlier in his career, but he pitched well after being traded to the Cards late last year. His 1.35 WHIP was still too high, but he could be worth consideration in the final rounds as he should see a few save chances.

Cardinals | Trevor Rosenthal was unavailable

Wed, 23 Sep 2015 14:40:48 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals RP Trevor Rosenthal was not unavailable in a save situation against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, Sept. 22, and neither was RP Jonathan Broxton. The Cardinals went with RP Kevin Siegrist to lock the game down in the eighth and RP Steve Cishek recorded the save. It was the 95th save of Cishek's career, and he became the sixth Cardinals reliever to record a save in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Rosenthal has been one of the more consistent closers in the league this year. He has 47 saves, a 1.49 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings. Continue to run with Rosenthal as your closer to finish out the season.

Cardinals | Jonathan Broxton acquired by Cards

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 08:56:03 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Jonathan Broxton was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, July 31. It's unknown what the Brewers received in return.

Fantasy Tip: The trade really does nothing for Broxton's already nonexistent fantasy value. However, in Milwaukee, it confirms that Jeremy Jeffress or Will Smith would probably be next in line for closing duties for the Brewers if Francisco Rodriguez is traded at the deadline.

Brewers | Jonathan Broxton to setup role

Thu, 26 Feb 2015 11:06:48 -0800

Milwaukee Brewers RP Jonathan Broxton will be pushed to a setup role after the team re-signed RP Francisco Rodriguez to be their closer Thursday, Feb. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Broxton's only real fantasy baseball value came with him inheriting the ninth-inning role, so now that that's gone, he shouldn't be drafted in standard 12-team mixed leagues. He might be worth a low investment in NL-only leagues as a handcuff to K-Rod.

Brewers | Milwaukee not talking Jonathan Papelbon

Thu, 12 Feb 2015 11:03:58 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon and the Phils have had a tough time trying to deal him, and Philadelphia was only willing to pay a significant portion of Papelbon's contract if Milwaukee gave up a top prospect, according to major league sources. The Brewers were unwilling to do so, but they offered giving up RP Jonathan Broxton to balance finances. The premise of such a trade was flawed, and the trade talks for Papelbon are now dormant.

Brewers | Jonathan Papelbon talks dormant

Thu, 12 Feb 2015 06:23:31 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies RP Jonathan Papelbon was the center of trade talks with the Milwaukee Brewers, but those talks are dormant Thursday, Feb. 12. The Phillies only were willing to pay a significant part of Papelbon's contract if the Brewers parted with a top prospect, according to major-league sources. The Brewers, unwilling to make such an exchange, instead proposed sending RP Jonathan Broxton to the Phillies as a way to balance the finances.
