Cubs | Jon Lester fans 10, gets stuck with loss

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 15:48:00 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester notched his first double-digit strikeout performance since last August, but he took the loss anyway despite giving up only one run on four hits and two walks in 7 1/3 innings against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, April 17.

Fantasy Tip: The damage came courtesy of Nolan Arenado, who went deep twice off Chicago pitching. Lester has only one win to show for his efforts through three starts despite logging at least six innings and not allowing more than three runs in any of those outings. His next shot for another victory is scheduled to come Friday at the Cincinnati Reds. Keep him active.

Rockies | Nolan Arenado has second two-homer game

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 15:00:46 -0700

Colorado Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado enjoyed his second multi-home run effort of the week on Sunday, April 17, connecting on a solo shot off Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester in the fourth inning before doing it again off RP Justin Grimm in the ninth.

Fantasy Tip: The homers proved to be the only runs scored by either club as Tyler Chatwood outdueled Lester in a pitchers' duel at Wrigley Field. Arenado's other power display came against the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field on Wednesday, when he finished with four hits and seven RBI. The 2015 All-Star leads the majors with 16 RBI and has easily lived up to his first-round fantasy draft status thus far.

Cubs | No-decision for Jon Lester

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 23:52:40 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester allowed three earned runs, five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Monday, April 11, against the Cincinnati Reds.

Fantasy Tip: Lester has managed two quality starts with nine strikeouts over 13 innings through two outings. So far, so good with Lester and that chip in his elbow. Fantasy owners need to set their lineup and hope that elbow holds up.

Cubs | Jon Lester magnificent Tuesday

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 23:05:33 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester was excellent in his first start of the year Tuesday, April 5, versus the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, giving up only one run on four hits in seven innings, en route to picking up the win. He added four strikeouts and walked none.

Fantasy Tip: There are concerns about Lester this year because of a bone chip in his elbow, but this first outing should definitely have his owners comforted. As long as he stays healthy and avoids the disabled list, the former Red Sox ace should provide his usual output and maintain his standing as a quality fantasy asset.

Cubs | Jon Lester sits down 10 via strikeout

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 15:15:52 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester struck out 10 batters over five innings while allowing a single hit during his final spring training start Wednesday, March 30.

Fantasy Tip: Lester should be viewed as a fringe fantasy ace, and he should collect more than his 11 wins from 2015. The veteran was solid last year with a 3.34 ERA, a 2.92 FIP, a 1.12 WHIP and a 9.1 K/9, and there is no reason to expect any significant negative regression this year. In fact, a better ERA could also accompany the likely uptick in wins.

Cubs | Jon Lester throws tidy outing

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 14:34:59 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester threw five scoreless innings with two hits and a walk allowed and two strikeouts Friday, March 25.

Fantasy Tip: Lester had allowed eight runs -- four earned -- through his previous seven innings this spring, so this is obviously a step in the right direction. Lester is in line for another solid fantasy season, and there is upside for him to pad the win column much more consistently than the 11 wins he returned last year. Lester should be viewed as a fringe fantasy ace and selected in the early middle rounds of drafts.

Cubs | Jon Lester has bone chip in elbow

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 08:49:02 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (elbow) has been pitching for several years with a bone chip in his left elbow but it is uncertain when or if it will break free or lead to an injury which will require surgery. The Cubs were aware of the situation when they signed him to a six-year, $155 million deal prior to the 2015 season but have been treating the condition as benign.

Fantasy Tip: Lester went 11-12 with a 3.34 ERA over 32 starts in his first season in the National League, with 207 strikeouts in 205 innings. The 32-year-old left-hander should continue to be viewed as a fantasy ace despite this news.

Cubs | Jon Lester working on flaws

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 15:08:11 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester continues to work on his fielding flaws, and he had three errant pickoff throws in a minor league game Tuesday, March 15. Opponents stole 44 bases in 55 tries off Lester last year.

"It's still a work in progress," Lester said. "It's an everyday thing for me, something I'll continue to work on. There were some negatives today, but that wasn't the idea going in. We didn't talk about trying different things on the mound."

Fantasy Tip: Lester's troubles throwing to bases is well-documented after last season, but it doesn't at all affect his standing as a fantasy ace. However, those playing in daily games should often target sleepers for steals when facing Lester and the Cubs.

Cubs | Jason Hammel likely for Game 4

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 09:01:29 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel is likely to pitch in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, Oct. 21, according to manager Joe Maddon. Hammel lasted just three innings in the Cubs' Game 4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the division series. The other option would be to bring SP Jon Lester back on three days of rest, and Maddon prefers not to do that.

Fantasy Tip: Hammel ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) was limited down the stretch and went six innings just once in his last six starts. He's not the most attractive option in the championship series against a hot Mets club.

Cubs | Jake Arrieta to follow Jon Lester

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 10:40:20 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, with SP Jake Arrieta following him in Game 2.

Fantasy Tip: Lester and Arrieta will face the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets Thursday. Arrieta has had a record-setting second half and remains the better option despite being touched up a bit in his last outing against the St. Louis Cardinals.
