Cubs | Jon Lester says he's ready

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 14:12:14 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) wasn't happy with his spring outing Tuesday, March 31, but he said he is ready for his opening night start against the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, April 5. However, it doesn't appear that he'll be 100% for his first start of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Lester won't be available at FantasyScore for his opening start. He should be considered a fantasy ace, but because he might have his pitch count capped in his first start, there should be consideration given to benching him against the Cardinals out of the gate in formats other than daily.

Cubs | Jon Lester to pitch in minors game

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 18:14:32 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) will start a minor league game Tuesday, March 31, at the team's complex, his final tuneup before the regular season opener. The Cubs want to be able to control his pitch count and situations Tuesday. He was scratched from his last spring start March 21 due to a tired arm.

Fantasy Tip: Lester remains on track for the regular season, but he draws the high-octane St. Louis Cardinals in his first start. At $7,700 (or 15.4% of cap) he is not a recommended option in FantasyScore.

Cubs | Jon Lester still on track

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:38:00 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) will make another minor league start next week and should approach 75 to 80 pitches. He is still on course to start opening day Sunday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: While it is difficult to bench a front-of-the-rotation starter, Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) will likely on a pitch count and faces a solid offensive Cardinals team in his first start. It could be a wise move to give him a start to prove his health, especially in formats with an innings cap. Lester should still be considered a low-end fantasy ace and worth targeting in the early middle rounds.

Cubs | Jon Lester's plan for remainder of spring

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 15:23:10 -0700

Updating an ongoing story, Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester's (arm) final two spring starts will be in controlled minor league games, according to manager Joe Maddon. "We just want to be able to control what he's doing," Maddon said. "I'm not concerned who he pitches against. He just needs somebody standing up there so he gets the requisite number of pitches thrown. If he says he feels good I feel good." Lester will also be on a 60-pitch limit in his start Thursday, March 26, and an approximately 80-pitch limit for the following start, according to Maddon and pitching coach Chris Bosio.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to check back for updates on Lester's progress leading into opening day. Reiterating previous tips, it might not be an ideal spot to utilize Lester in his first start with a projected pitch count and potentially cold weather. This is particularly true for leagues which have a strict innings cap and daily contests.

Cubs | Jon Lester could be on pitch count

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 14:26:40 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) may have a "restricted" pitch count for his opening day start Sunday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: A pitch count isn't ideal for fantasy value, as there is potential Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) could be pulled early, especially if it is a cold night. It isn't an ideal matchup against the Cardinals, either. It could be wise to bench Lester in leagues with a year-long innings cap, too. There is also still potential his "dead arm" lingers, so continue to check back for updates leading up to opening day.

Cubs | Jon Lester to start minor league game

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 13:11:10 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester will pitch in a minor league game Thursday, March 26, so the team can control his pitch count and have him face certain situations.

Fantasy Tip: This is called taking it easy on Lester, who is still targeted for Opening Day. Any worries of a "dead arm" may be overdone, but the Cubs are not taking any chances. Lester is a solid selection in the early and middle rounds of NL and mixed leagues.

Cubs | Jon Lester talks opening day

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 12:08:30 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) said he still has a long way to go, but he still plans to start opening day Sunday, April 5, against the St. Louis Cardinals. Lester added he is still scheduled to pitch Thursday, March 26.

Fantasy Tip: Lester ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) projects as a low-end fantasy ace in mixed leagues. While his 2014 numbers are likely due to regress, the relocation to the National League should help maintain his uptick in strikeouts from last season and mitigate that risk. He'll be a high-end starting pitcher option in FantasyScore contests, especially in favorable matchups. Continue to check back for updates as the season nears, though, as dead arm issues this early in the season are concerning.

Cubs | Jon Lester still pegged for opening day

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 12:51:57 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) is still set to be the opening day starter, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: It would still be wise to check back for updates on Lester throughout the spring. Still, unless there are further setbacks, continue to view him as a low-end fantasy ace for your fake rotation. Expect Lester to come off the board in the early middle rounds, and the move to the National League paired with the uptick in strikeouts he showed last year bode well for another solid season from the lefty.

Cubs | Jon Lester scratched from start Saturday

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 12:38:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester (arm) has been scratched from his start Saturday, March 21, because of dead arm, according to manager Joe Maddon. Maddon noted it is not a big concern.

Fantasy Tip: Lester has already been tabbed as the opening day starter, and as long as there aren't further setbacks, he remains a low-end No. 1 fantasy arm. The move to the National League and his uptick in strikeouts last season are positives, however, banking on last season's career-best numbers is likely too ambitious. Continue to check back for updates on the severity of Lester's injury and the timeline on when he'll pitch again.

Cubs | Jon Lester to start opening day

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 11:13:22 -0800

Chicago Cubs SP Jon Lester will officially start on opening day.

Fantasy Tip: It's not a surprise that the Cubs' big free-agent pitching acquisition will start the first game of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals in Chicago. There is some concern about Lester's WHIP these days, but his uptick in strikeouts last year was a comforting sign, and the move to the National League should keep him in fantasy ace territory.
