Houston Astros OF Rick Ankiel has a good shot to make the opening day roster, and he could even wind up starting in right field. He'll earn $750,000 with incremental bonuses based on plate appearances if he makes the team. Ankiel's strong outfield arm may set him apart from the team's other options. Those he'll be competing with include OFs Justin Maxwell, Fernando Martinez, J.D. Martinez and Brandon Barnes.

The Tampa Bay Rays have signed free-agent SP J.D. Martin (Marlins) to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The Miami Marlins optioned OF Bryan Petersen to Triple-A New Orleans Thursday, March 29, and assigned P J.D. Martin and INF Nick Green to minor league camp. OF Aaron Rowand was released. OFs Chris Coghlan and Austin Kearns look to have spots on the 25-man roster.

Ps Jose Alvarez, Robert Delaney, Chad Gaudin, Gary Glover, Chad James, Corey Madden, J.D. Martin, Rob Rasmussen, Robert Ray, Alejandro Ramos and Elih Villanueva, Cs Jake Jefferies, Luke Montz, Clint Sammons and Kyle Skipworth, INFs Nick Green, Donovan Solano, Terry Tiffee and Gil Velazquez and OFs Kyle Jensen and Aaron Rowand will participate in camp.

Washington Nationals SP J.D. Martin (back) will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a bulging disc in his lower back Tuesday, Aug. 10, in Los Angeles, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson. He expects to be ready by spring training.
