Mets | Three will know their fate soon

Fri, 01 Mar 2013 15:41:53 -0800

New York Mets RPs LaTroy Hawkins, Pedro Feliciano and Tim Byrdak (shoulder) have to be told by March 26 whether they've made the roster or they'll earn $100,000 to be sent to the minors. The Mets could also choose to flat out release them. Hawkins appears to be a lock for the bullpen and Feliciano is a leading contender as well. Byrdak's deadline is a non-issue because the team signed him knowing he wouldn't be ready for the start of the season.

Mets | Tim Byrdak throwing

Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:32:26 -0800

New York Mets RP Tim Byrdak (shoulder, knee) has been throwing on flat ground at 90 feet after undergoing surgery to fix a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder Sept. 6. He plans to return to camp Feb. 24 or 25 and hopes to begin throwing off the slope of a mound by early March and be throwing off the mound by the end of spring training. Byrdak's muscle had ripped off the bone, meaning his shoulder surgery wasn't as serious as SP Johan Santana's. "So, it sounds crazy, but all they had to do was reattach it to the bone and that was it," Byrdak said. "From what Dr. Altchek told me, there was no other damage to the shoulder. He said the shoulder, as a matter of fact, looked great for being a 39-year-old pitcher. There was small fraying in the back he took care of, that he shaved down. And that's been about it."
