Royals | Edinson Volquez picks up win

Sat, 14 May 2016 06:46:26 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez allowed one run on six hits in seven innings against the Atlanta Braves Friday, May 13, to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez snapped a three-game losing streak with his win Friday. He has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his eight starts this season. He is scheduled to face the Boston Red Sox in his next start and could be a risky option for some owners.

Royals | Edinson Volquez spins another gem

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 20:23:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez allowed five hits and struck out five over seven scoreless innings in a win over the Detroit Tigers Thursday, April 21, lowering his ERA to 1.46.

Fantasy Tip: Enjoy the fast start from Volquez, but don't expect him to be more than a No. 4 fantasy starter over the long haul.

Royals | Kris Medlen named fifth starter

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 11:18:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen has won the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, although manager Ned Yost said he may have his turn skipped the first time around. SPs Edinson Volquez, Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Chris Young are the club's first four starters.

Fantasy Tip: SPs Chien-Ming Wang, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee were among Medlen's chief competition for the job throughout spring training camp. Medlen went 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in four Cactus League starts but had 15 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander can be ignored outside of AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Royals | Edinson Volquez to start opener

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 08:40:37 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez will be the opening day starter against the New York Mets Sunday, April 3.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez is coming off a solid 2015 season when he finished with a 13-9 record and a 3.55 ERA. He should be a solid fantasy option if he is able to stay healthy this season and could be a middle-round pick in drafts.

Royals | Yordano Ventura, Edinson Volquez held back

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 12:07:58 -0700

Kansas City Royals SPs Yordano Ventura (illness) and Edinson Volquez (arm) will be skipped in their next spring turns, according to manager Ned Yost. Volquez is dealing with a dead arm.

Fantasy Tip: Neither issue should affect their availability for opening day. Volquez is more attractive to fantasy owners with his electric swing-and-miss stuff. He is a No. 3 fantasy starter with upside to pitch like an ace for stretches. Volquez can help build your rotation depth, but he's a risk in the ERA and WHIP departments.

Pirates | Jon Niese may get extra help

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:01:19 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese may get some extra help from pitching coach Ray Searage before the season starts. He has worked with pitchers like SP Francisco Liriano, J.A. Happ and Edinson Volquez.

Fantasy Tip: Those pitchers have had solid seasons when in Pittsburgh, so the thinking is Niese could benefit from Searage's help. He is targeted as the No. 3 starter in Pittsburgh, so he will likely go in the middle of NL drafts and in later rounds in mixed leagues.

Royals | Edinson Volquez returns home

Wed, 28 Oct 2015 12:11:50 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez has returned home to be with his family in the Dominican Republic after his father passed away due to complications from heart disease Tuesday, Oct. 27. Volquez will rejoin the team in New York. He pitched six innings and gave up three runs in Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Mets. Volquez is scheduled to pitch a potential Game 5 in New York Sunday, Nov. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez did not find out about his father's passing until after his outing in Game 1. It's hard to say how athletes will perform in the wake of such devastating news, so Volquez will be a true wild card if he makes his next start in a potential Game 5.

Royals | Edinson Volquez loses father

Tue, 27 Oct 2015 17:00:11 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez's father passed away in the Dominican Republic Tuesday, Oct. 27, according to a source close to the Volquez family. FantasyScore extends its condolences to Volquez's family and friends.

Fantasy Tip: It'll be an incredibly difficult evening for Volquez on the mound in Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Mets, but perhaps he channels his efforts toward his father and pitches a gem. It's hard to predict how an athlete will respond to a difficult situation, especially on the biggest of stages.
