Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano will start Friday, July 18, in the first game of the second half, followed by Charlie Morton, Jeff Locke, Edinson Volquez and Vance Worley, according to manager Clint Hurdle.
Fantasy Tip: Gerrit Cole (lat) remains out of the rotation for at least another week, but he should be back sometime in August. Worley remains NL-only fodder for as long as he's taking Cole's spot.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole's (shoulder) return Saturday, June 28, will push someone out of the starting rotation, but manager Clint Hurdle has not disclosed any information. Two candidates for demotions are SPs Jeff Locke and Brandon Cumpton, because they have minor league options remaining, while SP Vance Worley does not. Pirates SP Edinson Volquez was scheduled to pitch Saturday, June 28, on normal rest but is being skipped in favor of Cole.
Fantasy Tip: Check back for updates, because anyone starting for the Pirates has value to NL-only owners. Locke, Cumpton and Worley have all pitched well of late and are potential options in mixed leagues, at least, in favorable matchups. Volquez's inconsistency is frustrating, but it would be a bold move for Hurdle to remove him from the starting rotation.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Edinson Volquez earned his first win with his new team Thursday, April 17, in an 11-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Volquez is in the top 10 in the National League in ERA (1.71) and WHIP (0.95).

The Pittsburgh Pirates have stressed that SP Edinson Volquez keep his head on line with the plate and land squarely on his left foot during his delivery; he has rolled onto the left edge of the foot frequently in recent years. Volquez also has worked on removing the ball from his glove more quickly and keeping his front side close during his windup.
Fantasy Tip: More evidence that Volquez may be inching closer to recovering some of the elite promise he once held.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been trying to correct SP Edinson Volquez's delivery since acquiring him. The organization tracked down video of Volquez from his days as a 16-year-old in the Dominican Republic as well as extensive footage from other seasons and professional levels. After signing Volquez, the Pirates showed him during a video session that he was rushing his delivery and throwing his fastball with more of his front-side effort than from his back, which resulted in his right arm dragging behind during his delivery.
Fantasy Tip: Could this be the tipping point for the talented but control-challenged RHP? The Buccos have been known in recent years for pulling off miraculous pitcher reclamation projects. His first start was decent, as he went 5 2/3 IP with 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB and 4 K against the St. Louis Cardinals. With Jameson Taillon (elbow) done for the year, a revived Volquez could get a season-long leash in the rotation. In deep leagues, it's worth spending a trial roster spot on him for the chance that he's Pittsburgh's next success story.

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington indicated SP Edinson Volquez likely will make the starting rotation even though he has struggled at times during the spring training.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have already tweaked the delivery of SP Edinson Volquez, and they think he's in great physical shape heading into this season. "The challenge is command," general manager Neal Huntington said. "Staying in the strike zone and attacking the strike zone. But analytically, we saw a guy who can strike people out and get ground balls. It's the walks (4.8 per nine innings pitched) that are the challenge."

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed free-agent SP Edinson Volquez (Dodgers) to a one-year, $5 million deal Wednesday, Dec. 11.
Fantasy Tip: Volquez becomes the Bucs' latest reclamation pitching project after they turned Francisco Liriano around last season. Volquez has had control problems his entire career. If he can get that fixed, he could be a surprise in Pittsburgh. Don't forget about him.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Edinson Volquez (thumb) remains on track to make his next scheduled start Friday, Sept. 20, against the San Diego Padres. He left his previous outing due to a blister on his thumb, but he was able to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Sept. 18, without any issue.
