San Diego Padres SPs Edinson Volquez, Clayton Richard, Eric Stults and Jason Marquis make up the first four spots in the starting rotation, and SPs Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner (thumb) are believed to be battling it out for the final spot. The team won't need a fifth starter until April 6.

Fantasy Tip: Both Ross and Cashner could be quite productive in SD's five-man rotation. The team may decide to be cautious with Cashner as he comes off an unfortunate hunting accident, but they'd prefer not to send him to the bullpen because he has major upside as a starter. Cashner has much more upside as a high-strikeout pitching commodity and should be owned in more leagues than Ross.

San Diego Padres SP Edinson Volquez will start the team's opening day game April 1 against the New York Mets. It will be his third straight opening day start.

San Diego Padres SP Edinson Volquez will work on his command with pitching coach Darren Balsley when he returns from pitching for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Volquez is a strong candidate to start the team's opening day game April 1 against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: The control problems for Volquez continue to outweigh whatever dominance he has left in his arm, even when pitching at one of the most favorable parks for pitchers. Consider him with a late-round selection in mixed leagues, but nothing more.

San Diego Padres SP Edinson Volquez is set to become a free agent after this season, but he hopes he can reach an extension with the team to return. "I hope I don't get to the free-agent market," the right-handed pitcher said recently. "I'd like to stay a Padre. I think they know that. I love it here. I see a future with the Padres and I like everything about San Diego, the food, the weather, the community." The Padres want to see more consistent command out of Volquez before they'll even think about an extension.

The San Diego Padres have several open starting rotation spots after SPs Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez and Jason Marquis. Ps Anthony Bass, Casey Kelly, Tyson Ross, Eric Stults, Freddy Garcia and Robbie Erlin are all in the picture. SP Tim Stauffer (elbow) is about two weeks behind the other pitchers. SPs Andrew Cashner (thumb), Joe Wieland (elbow) and Cory Luebke (elbow) aren't options because they are rehabbing from injuries. Cashner is expected to be back on a mound by March 1 and Wieland and Luebke won't return until midseason or later after having Tommy John surgery.

The San Diego Padres avoided arbitration with SP Edinson Volquez Friday, Jan. 18, by agreeing to a one-year, $5.725 million deal. He made $2.2375 million last season.

Seven San Diego Padres players were among the 133 that filed for salary arbitration this week. C John Baker, SS Everth Cabrera, 3B Chase Headley, and P's Luke Gregerson, Joe Thatcher, Clayton Richard and Edinson Volquez filed. An eighth player, OF Will Venable, filed but settled with his team already. The Padres estimate their payroll will increase to $65 million with these arbitration filings.
