Pirates | Jon Niese may get extra help

Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:01:19 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese may get some extra help from pitching coach Ray Searage before the season starts. He has worked with pitchers like SP Francisco Liriano, J.A. Happ and Edinson Volquez.

Fantasy Tip: Those pitchers have had solid seasons when in Pittsburgh, so the thinking is Niese could benefit from Searage's help. He is targeted as the No. 3 starter in Pittsburgh, so he will likely go in the middle of NL drafts and in later rounds in mixed leagues.

Royals | Edinson Volquez returns home

Wed, 28 Oct 2015 12:11:50 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez has returned home to be with his family in the Dominican Republic after his father passed away due to complications from heart disease Tuesday, Oct. 27. Volquez will rejoin the team in New York. He pitched six innings and gave up three runs in Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Mets. Volquez is scheduled to pitch a potential Game 5 in New York Sunday, Nov. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez did not find out about his father's passing until after his outing in Game 1. It's hard to say how athletes will perform in the wake of such devastating news, so Volquez will be a true wild card if he makes his next start in a potential Game 5.

Royals | Edinson Volquez loses father

Tue, 27 Oct 2015 17:00:11 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez's father passed away in the Dominican Republic Tuesday, Oct. 27, according to a source close to the Volquez family. FantasyScore extends its condolences to Volquez's family and friends.

Fantasy Tip: It'll be an incredibly difficult evening for Volquez on the mound in Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Mets, but perhaps he channels his efforts toward his father and pitches a gem. It's hard to predict how an athlete will respond to a difficult situation, especially on the biggest of stages.

Mets | Daniel Murphy solid against Edinson Volquez

Tue, 27 Oct 2015 12:16:30 -0700

New York Mets 2B Daniel Murphy is 6-for-15 with a double and two RBIs against Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez for his career.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy will likely be paid well in the offseason with a lucrative free-agent deal. He is worth keeping in lineups for this year's postseason contests. As for 2016, he will likely go higher on draft boards because of his hot postseason.

Royals | Edinson Volquez throwing harder

Tue, 27 Oct 2015 11:50:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez averaged 93.8 mph on his heater this year, but his three highest single-game averages have come in the postseason: 94.7, 95.3 and 96.2. "A lot of energy has helped me a little bit more," Volquez said. "I think pitching in the playoffs is more exciting. And everything I pitch, everything I've got, that's what I've got. I was throwing 97, 98 the other day. I don't do that very often." Volquez has been effectively wild in the playoffs, with hitters going .182/.308/.212 against him with five walks and five strikeouts. He continues to throw his fastball about half the time and his curveball and changeup a quarter of the time.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez often walks a tight rope in terms of the location and control of his pitches. Throwing harder in the playoffs has helped him escape jams when necessary, but if he command deserts him in the World Series, things could get ugly quickly.

Royals | Edinson Volquez has history vs. NYM

Mon, 26 Oct 2015 18:19:51 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez, the starter for Game 1 of the World Series Tuesday, Oct. 27, is 2-1 with a 4.74 ERA in four starts against the New York Mets since the start of the 2012 season. He has walked 11 with an opponent batting average of .301 in 19 innings against the Mets during the span.

Fantasy Tip: Volquez is facing a Mets roster which is a lot better than those of the past three seasons, so the Royals starter could be in for a long night in the series opener.

Royals | KC sets World Series rotation

Mon, 26 Oct 2015 11:19:59 -0700

Kansas City Royals SPs Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto will start Games 1 and 2 of the World Series against the New York Mets, followed by SPs Yordano Ventura and Chris R. Young.

Fantasy Tip: The Royals have a tall task matching up with the Mets' young stud starters in the Series. Ventura is the most promising Royals starter with the most upside for 2016 fantasy owners to invest in. Cueto had a rough go of it upon being traded to KC midseason, but we would expect him to continue his fantasy ace-like ways next year.

Royals | Edinson Volquez loses Game 5

Wed, 21 Oct 2015 18:12:47 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Edinson Volquez allowed five runs on three hits over five innings in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series Wednesday, Oct. 21. He walked four and struck out two, falling to 1-2 on the postseason.

Fantasy Tip: After tossing six scoreless innings in Game 1 of the ALCS, Volquez ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) failed to record an out in the sixth inning of Game 5, allowing the Jays to blow the game wide open. Opposing hitters are just batting .179 against him this postseason but his 4:5 walk-to-strikeout ratio is rather alarming.
