Cubs | Miguel Montero not starting Sunday

Sun, 22 May 2016 14:17:21 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero is not starting Sunday, May 22, against the San Francisco Giants. C David Ross is batting eighth against Giants SP Madison Bumgarner.

Fantasy Tip: Montero and Ross have been largely platooning, so this move should come as no surprise to Cubs fans. Ross generally has little fantasy value even though he has shown he can hit home runs off Bumgarner (one in six at-bats).

Cubs | David Ross starting behind the plate

Wed, 18 May 2016 13:42:53 -0700

Chicago Cubs C David Ross is starting behind the plate and batting eighth against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson Wednesday, May 18. C Miguel Montero is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Ross is a low-end fantasy option, but he has been surprisingly productive with 11 runs, three home runs, 12 RBI and a .236/.338/.436 slash line. Hitting in a deep lineup helps, and he is a potential low-priced flier in daily contests. Going forward, expect Montero to receive more than half the starts behind the dish.

Cubs | Two sitting out for Cubs

Sun, 15 May 2016 11:04:51 -0700

Chicago Cubs OF Jorge Soler and C Miguel Montero are not in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole Sunday, May 15. 3B Kris Bryant will start in left field, while SS Javier Baez will start at third base and is batting seventh. C David Ross will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Baez and Ross have been playing well over the last week and can both be options in daily fantasy leagues. Ross should also have value in two-catcher leagues.

Cubs | Miguel Montero activated from DL

Sat, 14 May 2016 09:29:18 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, May 14, and is in the starting lineup against Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke. Montero is batting eighth in the lineup. The Cubs also designated OF Ryan Kalish for assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Montero is coming off a rehab assignment, but owners may want to see him play in a game or two before using him in their lineups since he has not played for the Cubs since the last week of April.

Cubs | Miguel Montero could return this weekend

Wed, 11 May 2016 10:58:45 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) went 0-for-3 and caught six innings for Class AAA Iowa Tuesday, May 10, in his first rehab game. He could be activated from the disabled list this weekend against the Pittsburgh Pirates if he avoids any setbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Montero was hitting only .208 (10-for-48) with one home run and six RBI before getting injured, so he was likely dropped in shallower mixed formats. He's a fringe fantasy starter in mixed leagues and should return to starting four or five times a week as the Cubs' primary backstop.

Cubs | Miguel Montero set for rehab assignment

Mon, 09 May 2016 14:54:49 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) is ready to begin a rehab assignment, but the organization is still finalizing which minor league affiliate he will join, Joe Maddon said Monday, May 9.

Fantasy Tip: Once back with the big club, Montero will receive semi-regular at-bats and start four or five games per week. He was struggling at the plate to start the season with just seven runs, a home run, six RBI and a .208/.316/.333 slash line. He is a fringe starting backstop in single-catcher leagues but should be owned and started confidently in all deeper formats when he returns.

Cubs | Miguel Montero to increase activity

Sat, 07 May 2016 17:55:04 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) will increase his hitting Sunday, May 8, but there is still no timetable for his return, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Unless you play in a two-catcher league, there is no need to hang on to Montero while he recovers.

Cubs | Miguel Montero could return soon

Thu, 05 May 2016 17:31:45 -0700

Updating a previous report, there is a possibility that Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) may not require a rehab assignment before being activated from the disabled list. He had an impressive showing during batting practice Thursday, May 5, launching several home runs, according to manager Joe Maddon.

Fantasy Tip: Based on the positive reports surrounding his progress, it wouldn't be surprising to see Montero return to action after spending the minimum 15 days on the disabled list. He got off to a slow start at the plate this year and isn't worth stashing outside of NL-only, two-catcher and deep mixed leagues.

Cubs | Still no timetable for Miguel Montero

Thu, 05 May 2016 14:40:40 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) still does not have a return timeline, but he did hit well during drills Thursday, May 5.

Fantasy Tip: Montero has had a slow start with just seven runs, a home run, six RBI and a .208/.316/.333 slash line. He shouldn't be stashed outside of cavernous mixed, two-catcher and NL-only leagues. David Ross and Tim Federowicz will continue to split starts behind the plate until Montero returns.

Cubs | Miguel Montero back in two weeks

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 10:05:03 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Miguel Montero (back) is expected to return from the disabled list in two weeks, according to manager Joe Maddon. Montero is dealing with lower back tightness, and his DL stint is retroactive to April 25, so he can return as soon as May 10. Montero was hitting .208 with one home run and six RBI in 13 games.

Fantasy Tip: Montero is off to a slow start, so you may need to drop him in some mixed leagues in favor of better options. But he still carries value in those deeper mixed and two-catcher setups as Chicago's primary backstop in a potent offense. David Ross should see the majority of starts, but he's a low-end option with no offensive upside.
