Brewers | Marco Estrada could return to starting role

Tue, 05 Aug 2014 18:50:46 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Marco Estrada could return from the bullpen to start in place of the injured SP Matt Garza (rib cage), but manager Ron Roenicke said Tuesday, Aug. 5, that the team would need Estrada in the bullpen for the next few games.

Fantasy Tip: Estrada was pretty erratic during his first stint in the rotation, so perhaps the team gives someone else a try. Mike Fiers was mentioned as a candidate due to his numbers at Triple-A, so don't grab Estrada unless he is confirmed for the role. Even then, he is only worth a look in NL-only play.

Brewers | Matt Garza to DL

Tue, 05 Aug 2014 11:15:52 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (oblique) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain Tuesday, Aug. 5, and RP Rob Wooten was recalled from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: This move is no surprise. Garza missed around two months with an oblique strain to start the 2013 season, so this could be a long-term injury. Hold onto Garza for now, but know that he probably won't give you much down the stretch. Marco Estrada is expected to enter the rotation. He's worth a look if you're desperate for a pitcher in NL leagues.

Brewers | Matt Garza expected to land on DL

Tue, 05 Aug 2014 10:19:00 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (oblique) is expected to land on the disabled list with a left oblique strain, manager Ron Roenicke said on his weekly radio show. Garza left his start early after six innings with the oblique strain. Garza suffered a similar injury in spring training last year and missed the first seven weeks of the season. SP Marco Estrada will likely be called upon to take Garza's spot in the rotation, and RP Mike Fiers is likely to be called up from Triple-A Nashville to pitch in long relief.

Fantasy Tip: Oblique injuries almost always land a pitcher on the DL, so this is nothing new. Plan to lose Garza for a good chunk of time. Estrada, who struggled mightily in the rotation and was demoted to the bullpen, should only be worth consideration in NL-only leagues.

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson will start Saturday

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 18:56:38 -0700

The Milwaukee Brewers will call up SP Jimmy Nelson to start Saturday, July 12, and move SP Marco Estrada to the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Nelson has a 1.46 ERA in Triple-A this season with 114 strikeouts in 111 innings. Although it remains to be seen if the move is permanent, Nelson is worth an immediate grab in NL-only leagues and worth keeping an eye on in other formats.

Brewers | Marco Estrada's rotation spot in jeopardy?

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 15:29:31 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Marco Estrada did not receive a vote of confidence from manager Ron Roenicke Tuesday, July 8, when Roenicke was asked about Estrada's rotation spot. Roenicke said, "We'll see."

Fantasy Tip: Estrada's struggles with the long ball are well documented, at this point. Jimmy Nelson's Triple-A numbers are impressive and he has reached that "nothing left to prove" stage in the minors.

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson in the plans?

Tue, 08 Jul 2014 15:25:57 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson's promotion from Triple-A Nashville has been discussed, according to manager Ron Roenicke. Roenicke did not elaborate on specific details.

Fantasy Tip: Marco Estrada leads the major leagues -- and by a large margin -- in home runs allowed and Nelson has been dominant in the minors. He has immediate NL-only value, if recalled, and could be a factor in mixed leagues. If Nelson has eligibility as a relief pitcher in your league, it can be particularly valuable in some formats. He is a potential stash candidate, or at the very least, monitor his situation for a potential promotion.

Brewers | Marco Estrada allows two more long balls

Tue, 01 Jul 2014 14:27:19 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Marco Estrada allowed two home runs Tuesday, July 1, against the Toronto Blue Jays. Estrada has surrendered 26 home runs this season, which is nine more than any other pitcher.

Fantasy Tip: Estrada's 17.3 percent HR/FB rate is third highest in the league among qualified starting pitchers and nearly double the league average of 9.9 percent. His 4.94 ERA is another statistical killer. It isn't advised to roster Estrada in mixed leagues at his point, despite his pace for 13 wins and 166 strikeouts. If the home run allowance regresses back toward the mean, he should have a decent second half.

Brewers | Marco Estrada to remain in rotation

Mon, 16 Jun 2014 00:45:22 -0700

Updating a previous item, Milwaukee Brewers SP Marco Estrada will remain in the rotation until manager Ron Roenicke and general manager Doug Melvin have a further chance to evaluate him.

Fantasy Tip: The team prefers to leave Jimmy Nelson, whom many consider an obvious replacement, in Triple-A so he can get regular work. Still, if you own Estrada you may want to look elsewhere for help or pick up Nelson if you have bench room.
