Justin Sellers Fantasy Baseball News, Notes, Rumors and Statistics
The latest Justin Sellers MLB and fantasy baseball news
Wed, 08 May 2013 15:33:44 -0700 The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled C Tim Federowicz from the minors Wednesday, May 8, and optioned SS Justin Sellers in a corresponding move. Fantasy Tip: Ramon Hernandez hasn't been contributing at all with his bat, so expect Federowicz to be the primary offensive backup to A.J. Ellis. Sellers being optioned confirms that the Dodgers will run with Dee Gordon as their primary shortstop with Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) out. There's a decent chance Gordon will stay at short when Ramirez returns, too.
Mon, 06 May 2013 11:36:30 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly didn't sound optimistic about the chances of SS Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) returning from the disabled list when he's eligible. "A while ... I hope that puts it in the right category," Mattingly said. "You never really know when a guy's ready or not because you can't ever get to the intensity that you need to get to on the hamstring where you're going to explode and ask for more of your body. It's going to be a while." Ramirez, on the other hand, is hoping for a quick recovery. Fantasy Tip: Gordon started at shortstop both Saturday and Sunday in Ramirez's absence. Justin Sellers is still on roster, and he may get the occasional start at shortstop, but Gordon should now be owned in all leagues because of his speed and the fact that Ramirez could be out for quite a while. Also, the Dodgers are considering moving Ramirez to third base whenever he does return.
Sat, 04 May 2013 09:47:24 -0700 The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to place SS Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list because of a left hamstring injury sustained while running the bases Friday, May 3. In a corresponding move, SS Dee Gordon will be called up from Triple-A Albuquerque. Fantasy Tip: It is uncertain at this time if Gordon or INF Justin Sellers will get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop, but Gordon appears to be the better bet and is the more attractive fantasy pickup for his speed. In 25 games for Albuquerque this year, Gordon hit .314 with 12 RBIs and 14 steals. Sellers might remain a factor for NL-only leaguers.
Thu, 25 Apr 2013 11:32:57 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb) said he will soon head to Single-A Rancho Cucamonga to begin his rehab assignment. Manager Don Mattingly said Ramirez still had some pain in his right thumb with the splint taped to it, but it hasn't kept him from doing baseball activity, and he's been hitting for 10 days. Ramirez could start his rehab assignment as early as Friday, April 26, meaning he could be activated from the disabled list Monday, April 29. Fantasy Tip: It looks like he'll make his season debut with the Blue early next week, so prepare your roster for his arrival. Justin Sellers will now be without a job, and he'll likely be sent back to the minors.
Wed, 17 Apr 2013 10:02:44 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly won't pin any blame for the club's lack of run production in the early going on SS Justin Sellers. The shortstop has batted .176 (6-for-34) with a home run and a .263 OBP in his 11 games. Mattingly said defensively the club has gotten what it wanted from Sellers. The manager said he doesn't expect more from the middle infielder's bat, but he believes Sellers can improve. The Dodgers have hit .268 as a team (fifth in the NL) and are third in team OBP (.343). They haven't turned base runners into runs, however; they have scored 37 runs in 13 games, putting them third from last in the National League and last in the NL West. Fantasy Tip: NL-only owners who bothered to roster Sellers can take solace -- if that's how they want to look at it -- in the fact that the Blue are unlikely to remove him from the lineup while Hanley Ramirez (thumb) is out. Seriously, Sellers hit 14 bombs in both 2010 and 2011 in the minors, while posting respectable averages of .285 and .304, respectively. He's not great, but he's capable of a little more, and the penalty for NL-only players to keep him active and find out shouldn't be that great since he's a short-term solution.
Wed, 03 Apr 2013 15:48:42 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said SS Justin Sellers' status remains the same. Sellers committed two errors Tuesday, April 2, and isn't starting Wednesday, April 3.
Mon, 01 Apr 2013 18:54:20 -0700 The Los Angeles Dodgers are sold on SS Justin Sellers because of his defense, and he could see plenty of playing time early in the season, according to manager Don Mattingly. "Obviously, we'll see where it goes," Mattingly said. "With the pitching staff we've put together, we want to make sure we catch it as much as we can." The Dodgers like Sellers at shortstop more than SS Dee Gordon. "We want to be able to catch it," Mattingly said. "And we're willing to sacrifice offense to do it." Fantasy Tip: Sellers is only worth starting if you are extremely desperate to fill a middle infield spot in the deepest of NL leagues. It looks as though Gordon will remain in the minors, so if you picked him up in hopes the Dodgers would go with him at short, it's probably safe to cut him at this point.
Fri, 29 Mar 2013 19:47:48 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers SS Justin Sellers might be the team's starter at shortstop on Opening Day, with 3B Luis Cruz starting at third base. Sellers might not necessarily be the full-time starter, but he could platoon at shortstop until SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb) is able to return. Fantasy Tip: Sellers is worth a look in deeper NL-only leagues for help at the middle infielder position, but his value is negligible in mixed formats at this point.
Thu, 21 Mar 2013 11:09:43 -0700 Los Angeles Dodgers SS Justin Sellers will be considered to fill in for SS Hanley Ramirez (thumb), even though Sellers was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque Tuesday, March 19. SS Dee Gordon (ankle) is dealing with a mild left ankle sprain. Sellers is considered a better pure defender than Gordon, but he was hitting only .150 this spring. INFs Luis Cruz, Nick Punto, Juan Uribe and Jerry Hairston Jr. are all options, as well. SS Miguel Rojas is in minor league camp and has been compared defensively to former SS Omar Vizquel. Fantasy Tip: It's unclear what direction the Dodgers will go at shortstop, but Cruz and Gordon make the most sense. The bottom line is none of these options have significant fantasy value, and Los Angeles will likely stick with whoever is playing the best.
Tue, 19 Mar 2013 11:22:37 -0700 The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned 2B Justin Sellers and RP Shawn Tolleson to Triple-A Albuquerque Tuesday, March 19, and reassigned C Jesus Flores to minor league camp.
