Thu, 16 May 2013 14:24:08 -0700 Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost is riding hot streaks from OF Jarrod Dyson (ankle) and 2B Elliot Johnson right now, and he indicated that he doesn't mean he's going with platoon setups at those positions. "I could play (Jeff) Francoeur (on Friday) against a right-hander," Yost said. "Then it's not a platoon. I'm going day-to-day right now. Dyson is swinging the bat well, so he's playing more." Dyson's availability is in question for this weekend, though, after he sprained his right ankle Wednesday, May 15. Dyson has started five of the team's last eight games and brings speed to their lineup. Johnson is the team's primary utility player in the infield, but he's started eight of the last 14 games with 2B Chris Getz hitting in a 4-for-47 (.193) slump. Fantasy Tip: Dyson's playing time streak could run out due to his injury, depending on the severity, but he's worth owning while he's playing for his speed skills in deep leagues. Johnson is worth a pick-up in AL-only leagues while he's swinging a hot bat, too.
Thu, 09 May 2013 16:29:17 -0700 Kansas City Royals OF Alex Gordon has moved from the leadoff spot to third Thursday, May 9, with 1B Billy Butler hitting cleanup. "The most important two spots we have in the lineup right now should be manned by Gordy and Billy," manager Ned Yost said. "That's three and four. Everything else is interchangeable depending on who's hot and the matchups." The team's No. 4 hitter has ranked last in RBIs (seven), extra-base hits (six) and slugging percentage (.277), and they are ranked 29th among 30 teams with a .271 on-base percentage. SS Alcides Escobar is batting leadoff with OF Lorenzo Cain following him. Escobar prefers to hit second and has much more experience in that slot, but he doesn't have a problem hitting atop the order. 2B Chris Getz and OF Jeff Francoeur returned to the lineup Thursday, but they'll need to show production soon if they want to keep everyday jobs. Yost plans on using this new-look lineup for an extended period of time. Fantasy Tip: Right now, Gordon and Butler are the team's best hitters, so it makes sense to put them in the biggest run-producing spots in the lineup. Yost also cited that it splits up his left- and right-handed bats in Gordon and Eric Hosmer and Butler and Mike Moustakas.
Wed, 08 May 2013 15:07:52 -0700 Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost is considering changing up his lineup in the near future that would possibly include moving OF Alex Gordon from leadoff to third in the lineup and increased playing time for OF Jarrod Dyson and 2B Elliot Johnson. Dyson started in center field Wednesday, May 8, and OF Lorenzo Cain shifted to right in place of struggling OF Jeff Francoeur. Johnson started for the second day over 2B Chris Getz. Gordon is hitting only .180 (9-for-50) when leading off an inning compared to .490 (24-for-49) with runners on base. Yost is considering Dyson, Cain or SS Alcides Escobar for options at leadoff. Moving Gordon to third in the lineup would allow 1B Billy Butler to return to the cleanup spot. Fantasy Tip: This could have varying degrees of fantasy implications. For one, this will give Gordon more opportunities for RBIs, and it also should put Dyson on the radar of deep mixed gamers if Francoeur continues to lose out. Yost believes Eric Hosmer eventually deserves to be the three hitter, but he's holding off until he picks it up at the plate.
Tue, 07 May 2013 15:17:01 -0700 Kansas City Royals 2B Chris Getz is hitting only .216 and is 4-for-37 since hitting a home run April 16. 2B Elliot Johnson started over Getz Tuesday, May 7. "I'm going to start playing Elliot to keep him in the mix," manager Ned Yost said. "Mainly at second. We'll see how it goes. I'll go day to day with it. I want to get Getzie going a little more. He's not swinging the bat like I know he can." 3B Miguel Tejada also started over 3B Mike Moustakas, who is hitting .198 overall and .160 against lefties, Tuesday. Fantasy Tip: Johnson is only worth considering for a roster spot in deep AL-only universes since Getz still seems to be Yost's primary second baseman in the long run.
Wed, 01 May 2013 14:36:27 -0700 Kansas City Royals 2B Chris Getz (allergies) is battling allergies and is sitting in favor of SS Elliot Johnson Wednesday, May 1.
Wed, 27 Mar 2013 23:44:59 -0700 Kansas City Royals 2B Chris Getz banged out six hits Wednesday, March 27, in an exhibition game that ended in a 9-9 tie with the Chicago Cubs. Getz had a triple, a double and four singles in his perfect night.
Sat, 23 Mar 2013 09:45:19 -0700 The Kansas City Royals have optioned 2B Johnny Giavotella to Triple-A Omaha, meaning that 2B Chris Getz will be the team's Opening Day starter at second base.
Tue, 05 Mar 2013 13:44:27 -0800 The Kansas City Royals are expected to take the decision on the starting second base spot between 2Bs Chris Getz and Johnny Giavotella down to the wire this spring, and the loser of the competition is expected to be sent to Triple-A Omaha. Giavotella needs to prove he can hit at the major league level in order to win a job now that his defense has improved. Getz is the better defensive player, and he's been working with hitting coaches Jack Maloof and Andrew David on a new batting stance. Getz's goal is to add significant pop at the plate. "Probably from an average eye," Getz said, "it is kind of a drastic change. Really, I'm just getting into a hitting position quicker than what I was doing before."
Mon, 04 Feb 2013 09:07:55 -0800 Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost expects the battle for the starting second base job this spring between 2Bs Chris Getz (thumb) and Johnny Giavotella to be an intense one. Yost said Getz is healthy and has added some bulk in the offseason. Giavotella had a slash line of .250/.276/.330 with a home run and nine RBIs in 32 games after Getz broke his thumb in August. Giavotella's weak spot has been his defensive play.
Sat, 19 Jan 2013 13:55:48 -0800 Kansas City Royals 2B Chris Getz (thumb) said the surgery he had on his left thumb has not hindered his ability to perform offseason workouts. "On the surface, it doesn't look good, but it's a good scar," Getz said. "It feels really good. It hasn't hindered my offseason workouts at all. There have been no issues. I'm not even thinking about it."
