The Tampa Bay Rays assigned RP Brandon Gomes to minor league camp Wednesday, March 28, meaning RP Burke Badenhop has won a spot in the bullpen. C Chris Gimenez was also re-assigned.

Tampa Bay Rays RP Burke Badenhop, who is fighting for the last available bullpen spot, has been working on a different slider in spring training, which he hopes will help him achieve more success against lefties. "My slider typically is more 'slurvey,'" Badenhop said. "I was trying to throw a cutter, and it turned out to be a true slider. It's a little firmer, it's a little shorter, it's on the plate longer. It's been pretty decent so far. I'm pretty happy with that."

The Tampa Bay Rays avoided arbitration with SP David Price and OF B.J. Upton Tuesday, Jan. 17, by agreeing to one-year deals with both. Price will receive $4.35 million while Upton will make $7 million. RP Burke Badenhop also avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.075 million deal. The team appears headed to arbitration with SP Jeff Niemann.

Florida Marlins RP Burke Badenhop was cut from the major league roster and reassigned to the minors Tuesday, March 29, according to Clark Spencer of The Miami Herald. C John Baker, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, will likely be the last cut Wednesday, March 30, or Thursday, March 31.
