Cleveland Indians SP Jeanmar Gomez (hip) left his Cactus League outing Friday, March 30, after injuring his hip while stretching at first base to catch a throw. Gomez, who appeared to be the favorite for the fifth starter job, is now up in the air for opening day. He is competing with SP Kevin Slowey for the No. 5 spot.

The Cleveland Indians want Ps Jeanmar Gomez, David Huff and Kevin Slowey to make one more appearance each before they decide on the winner of the team's fifth starter spot. Huff is scheduled to work in a Cactus League game against the Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday, March 29, while Gomez is set to work Friday, March 30. There has been no announcement when Slowey will work next.

The Cleveland Indians Ps Zach McAllister and Chen-Chang Lee, INF Cord Phelps and OF Trevor Crowe to minor league camp Thursday, March 22. McAllister and Phelps were optioned to Triple-A Columbus. SPs Jeanmar Gomez, Kevin Slowey and David Huff are competing for a rotation spot now.

Cleveland Indians SP Jeanmar Gomez appears to be in the lead for the fifth rotation spot. He is competing with Ps David Huff, Zach McAllister and Kevin Slowey. Manager Manny Acta said Gomez continues to have good movement on his fastball and has improved his slide from when he made his major league debut in 2010. "Gomez is throwing the ball the best out of all those guys," Acta said. "It's still very early, but he's not hurting his chances."

Cleveland Indians SP Kevin Slowey allowed two runs and five hits with no walks over three innings in his second Cactus League start Sunday, March 11, against the Texas Rangers. Slowey said he was closer mechanically today to where he needs to be, and he added in all of his pitches, unlike his first outing when he threw just fastballs. Slowey is one of four pitchers competing for the fifth spot in the rotation.

Cleveland Indians SP David Huff will start in the Cactus League opener against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, March 3, and he will pitch two innings. Huff is competing with SPs Kevin Slowey, Jeanmar Gomez, Zach McAllister and perhaps Scott Barnes for the fifth starter job. "I'm not making my mind up on anybody right now," manager Manny Acta said. "Everybody is looking great throwing bullpens with nobody standing at the plate. Everyone is tied for first place."
