Wed, 22 May 2013 00:55:02 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza returned to the active rotation Tuesday, May 21, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He allowed only one hit over his five innings, striking out five and walking three while throwing 82 pitches; however, after he left, the Cubs blew the lead and Pittsburgh walked away with a 5-4 victory.
Tue, 21 May 2013 12:20:13 -0700 The Chicago Cubs claimed RP Eduardo Sanchez off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, May 21, and sent him to Triple-A Iowa. He had a 3.72 ERA in nine outings with Triple-A Memphis this year. RP Michael Bowden will be designated for assignment Tuesday to make a roster spot for SP Matt Garza (lat).
Sat, 18 May 2013 09:22:01 -0700 The Chicago Cubs will activate SP Matt Garza (lat) from the 15-day disabled list in time for him to start their game Tuesday, May 21. Manager Dale Sveum said Garza likely will be limited to 85 to 90 pitches in his first start. Fantasy Tip: Garza has been out since last July because of elbow and lat injuries. Owners should look to add him in their starting lineups in all leagues, but he could be limited in his first few starts since he is coming back from the injury.
Thu, 16 May 2013 21:54:46 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza (lat) logged six shutout innings Thursday, May 16, in a rehab start for Triple-A Iowa. He allowed two hits and struck out six while not allowing a walk. He's on schedule to join the big-league club sometime next week. When Garza comes back, P Carlos Villanueva looks like the most realistic rotation casualty. Though manager Dale Sveum hasn't shut down the idea of a six-man rotation, it's unlikely to happen in the long term. Fantasy Tip: He'll probably have around two months to work back into form so the Cubs can showcase him for a possible late-July trade. Villanueva can be dropped in mixed leagues when Garza re-establishes his rotation spot. Scott Feldman has pitched relatively well lately, and Villanueva's past bullpen experience is actually working against his fantasy value here.
Tue, 14 May 2013 14:19:32 -0700 Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said the team may use a six-man rotation when SP Matt Garza (lat) returns to the team. Fantasy Tip: Travis Wood, Scott Feldman and Carlos Villanueva have all been carrying their weight in the rotation, so Sveum might find it too hard to bump one of them to the bullpen to make room for Garza. Don't expect the six-man rotation to last for long, though, so those three might be competing to stay in the rotation in their next few starts.
Mon, 13 May 2013 16:29:36 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza (lat) will make another rehab outing for Triple-A Iowa Thursday, May 16, and the team will make a decision on if they'll activate him from the disabled list after that. He allowed three hits and walked two in 3 1/3 innings with Double-A Tennessee Saturday, May 11, for his third minor league rehab start. Garza threw with a lot of "aggressiveness" during his bullpen session Monday, May 13. Fantasy Tip: Garza is nearing full strength, and he hasn't had any setbacks during his rehab process. He needs to be owned in all leagues for when he returns to the Cubbies' rotation.
Sun, 12 May 2013 09:49:28 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza (lat) threw 66 pitches over 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start for Double-A Tennessee Saturday, May 11, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Sat, 11 May 2013 16:43:47 -0700 Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said SP Matt Garza (lat) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa before being reevaluated. Fantasy Tip: It appears like Garza could rejoin the team in the next week or two. Owners should consider looking to add Garza if he is available in their mixed leagues.
Sat, 11 May 2013 11:57:29 -0700 Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said when SP Matt Garza (lat) returns from the disabled list, the team will not use a six-man rotation. He added that SPs Jeff Samardzija, Edwin Jackson and Travis Wood won't be moved to the bullpen.
Tue, 07 May 2013 12:49:48 -0700 Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza (lat) will make his next rehab start for Double-A Tennessee, and he's expected to make at least two more minor league outings before joining the team. "He was really pumped up, everything went really well," said manager Dale Sveum, who talked to Garza after the outing. "The hits were a blooper, bunt hit, so he was pretty efficient and threw all his pitches 100 percent. His slider was up to 87 mph today. He was getting after it a little bit today." Fantasy Tip: Garza looks to be very close to making his season debut for the Cubbies this year. If he's still out there on the waiver wire of your mixed league, you should stash him now.
