Brewers | Matt Garza rehab update

Sat, 28 May 2016 11:52:28 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Class A Wisconsin Tuesday, May 31. If all goes well, he is hoping to return to the parent club's starting rotation June 14.

Fantasy Tip: Garza went 6-14 with a 5.63 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) for the Brewers in 2015 but is likely to step into a starting role once he is healthy enough to return, which speaks volumes about the rest of the team's rotation. If he performs well in his first few outings, the 32-year-old right-hander could be worthy of consideration for NL-only and cavernous mixed fantasy leagues.

Brewers | Matt Garza set for bullpen session

Tue, 24 May 2016 14:49:49 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) will throw a 60-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, May 25, and will then move to live batting practice Saturday, May 28. Garza said he's had no setbacks and is aiming for a return in mid-June.

Fantasy Tip: Garza should have a rotation spot to return to, but you'd have to be really desperate for a starting arm in a cavernous mixed or NL-only league to consider adding him. Garza has yet to pitch this season and had an ugly 5.63 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and just 6.3 strikeouts per nine innings with Milwaukee in 2015.

Brewers | No setbacks during Matt Garza's bullpen

Thu, 19 May 2016 15:11:04 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) said his bullpen session went well Thursday, May 19, and his next one is scheduled for Saturday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Garza returned an unimpressive 5.63 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 6.3 K/9 through 148 2/3 innings last season, and he shouldn't be trusted outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. Stay tuned for updates as he works his way back into the mix for the Brewers.

Brewers | Matt Garza, Corey Knebel set for bullpens

Wed, 18 May 2016 14:59:31 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) and RP Corey Knebel (oblique) will throw their first bullpen sessions since sustaining injuries Thursday, May 19, and Friday, May 20, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: There is very limited fantasy value here, and even in NL-only formats, neither hurler are must-add arms. Knebel does have some strikeout upside given his career 10.5 K/9 through 59 innings, but you still might want to see him prove his health on the mound before acquiring his services.

Brewers | Matt Garza close to mound work

Tue, 17 May 2016 23:10:12 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) could throw off a mound this week. He has been out all season with a right lat injury.

Fantasy Tip: Garza's stuff has regressed since his younger, hard-throwing days. He's only a depth option in NL-only leagues for now.

Brewers | Matt Garza not throwing bullpens

Tue, 10 May 2016 11:09:29 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) is a ways off in his rehab and hasn't resumed throwing bullpen sessions yet.

Fantasy Tip: Garza has yet to make his season debut, and he looks like he won't at least until sometime next month. Career worsts across the board last year show he's a pitcher in steep decline, and he should really only be stashed in deep NL-only leagues if you're desperate.

Brewers | Scooter Gennett to DL

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 08:27:38 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers 2B Scooter Gennett (oblique) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right oblique tightness Thursday, April 28. INF Hernan Perez was recalled from Class AAA Colorado Springs. SP Matt Garza (lat) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Gennett popped four homers in the early going, but he doesn't hold the kind of value to stash him in mixed leagues. Perez isn't worth more than a possible DFS flyer in good matchups.

Brewers | Three Brewers pitchers progressing

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 15:49:38 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) will begin jogging soon, according to manager Craig Counsell. SP Matt Garza (lat) and RP Corey Knebel (oblique) are both "progressing the right way."

Fantasy Tip: All three pitchers are currently on the DL and won't be back for a while. With Jeremy Jeffress looking good in the closer's role, Smith and Knebel have become afterthoughts for Milwaukee's bullpen. Garza is one to watch when he returns in deep mixed leagues, but he's not worth stashing for now.

Brewers | Matt Garza out 4-6 weeks

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 14:09:10 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) said he will be out at least four to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: That kills any value Garza may have had in mixed leagues for the time being. Tyler Cravy is an option to enter the rotation at Garza's expense, but he's only worth eyeing in NL-only leagues.

Brewers | Matt Garza to the DL

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 10:13:18 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Matt Garza (lat) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain Tuesday, April 5, and SP Tyler Cravy was recalled from Class AAA in a corresponding move. The disabled list stint is retroactive to April 2.

Fantasy Tip: Garza likely went undrafted in most mixed leagues after three straight seasons of a drop in skills. His career worst season in 2015 had turned many off, for good reason. This injury to begin the year solidifies that. Taylor Jungmann will fill in in the meantime. He has strikeout upside but has been too wild to rely on outside of NL-only leagues for now.
