Tampa Bay Rays P Cesar Ramos will start Sunday, April 13, and that the club will call up a reliever by that day.
Fantasy Tip: Ramos gets the nod over Erik Bedard but, until he proves otherwise, warrants only an AL-only addition. It's far from guaranteed that he's a long-term rotation solution.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Erik Bedard said he will opt out of his contract and become a free agent if the doesn't break camp with the club. He has gone 2-1 with a 7.15 ERA in 11 1/3 innings this spring, and opponents are hitting .347 against him. Bedard is competing with SPs Cesar Ramos and Jake Odorizzi for the No. 5 starting spot. Manager Joe Maddon expects to make a decision on the fifth starter gig Saturday, March 22.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) made 25 throws at 45 to 60 feet Wednesday, March 12. He said he felt good and was encouraged by the results.
Fantasy Tip: Hell Boy probably won't surface in regulation game action until May, as Jake Odorizzi, Cesar Ramos and Erik Bedard battle it out to take his spot. Hellickson's recent performances, however, say he's not a lock to jump immediately back into the rotation.

Tampa Bay Rays SPs Jake Odorizzi, Erik Bedard and Cesar Ramos all pitched Monday, March 10, as they fight for the fifth spot in the rotation. In his first start of the spring, Odorizzi lasted 2 1/3 innings; he allowed two hits and one walk, also hitting a batter and striking out one. He's still working on the splitter-changeup he has dubbed "The Thing." Bedard, cultivating a changeup of his own, yielded three runs on five hits in three frames. Ramos gave up five hits and two runs in 4 1/3 frames. Manager Joe Maddon said spring training results will not dictate his selection for the fifth starter.
Fantasy Tip: Odorizzi stands as the favorite and is most worth a deep-mixed speculation, but this could be a mix-and-match situation until Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) returns, and even afterward.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi is working on a new split-fingered pitch that acts like a changeup with late downward movement. He struggled to control the pitch during his outing Monday, March 10. Odorizzi limited damage, though, as he remains firmly in competition with SPs Cesar Ramos, Erik Bedard and Nathan Karns for the final rotation spot. Manager Joe Maddon said the decision won't come down to spring statistics.
