The Chicago Cubs optioned SP Chris Volstad to Triple-A Iowa and recalled C Blake Lalli from Iowa Friday, May 18. C Geovany Soto (knee) will be placed on the 15-day disabled list. Lalli was hitting .178 (13-for-73) with three home runs and 11 RBIs in the minors. Volstad was 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA after losing Thursday, May 17.

Chicago Cubs SP Chris Volstad is still looking for his first victory since July 10. Volstad is 0-5 this season with a 6.92 ERA. He comes off a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on May 12, when he allowed six earned runs on nine hits. Volstad has just one quality start to his credit this season, going back to April 14.

Chicago Cubs SP Chris Volstad allowed six runs on nine hits in six innings against the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday, May 12, to suffer his fifth loss of the season. He struck out one batter and walked two in the game. He has not earned a win since July 17, 2011.

Chicago Cubs SP Chris Volstad allowed five earned runs, four hits and three walks while striking out just one batter Saturday, May 5, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He suffered from one bad inning, the second, in which he allowed three runs, including a pair with two outs. "Runners on from the stretch has been a struggle; it's no secret," Volstad said. "That one inning. I just have to be better in those situations. That's all it comes down to."

Chicago Cubs SP Matt Garza (illness) has been pushed back in the rotation due to a virus and will not start Saturday, May 5. SP Chris Volstad will start in his place, and Garza hopes to pitch Sunday, May 6.

Chicago Cubs WR Jeff Samardzija will make his next scheduled start Tuesday, May 1, against the Cincinnati Reds. The move is being made to allow SP Chris Volstad to work Monday, April 30, and work on regular rest.

Chicago Cubs SP Chris Volstad allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits over six innings in a loss Saturday, April 14, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He threw 62 strikes out of 101 pitches. A four-run fourth inning doomed Volstad. "I kind of stopped executing," Volstad said. "Pitches were out over the plate and up a little bit. I guess at that point you need to slow it down and take a deep breath and go back to what I was doing earlier in the game."

He also struck out six batters in the 87-pitch team debut. "That first inning kind of got me; I just wasn't in the zone enough," Volstad said. "They were fouling off pitches and got me in a hole early."
