Colorado Rockies SP Chris Volstad has a realistic shot at winning the No. 5 rotation spot this spring. Volstad worked with director of pitching Mark Wiley while with the Miami Marlins.

The Colorado Rockies have interest in several free agent SPs including Aaron Cook (Red Sox), Jeff Karstens (Pirates), Derek Lowe (Yankees) and Chris Volstad (Cubs). The team would prefer not to offer a guaranteed contract, however.

The Kansas City Royals added Ps John Lamb, Mike Montgomery, Chris Dwyer, Donnie Joseph, Justin Marks and Juan Gutierrez to their 40-man roster Tuesday, Nov. 20, in order to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft. As a result, Ps Vin Mazzaro, Chris Volstad and Ryan Verdugo, Cs Brayan Pena and Adam Moore, 1B Clint Robinson and OF Derrick Robinson were designated for assignment. Backup C Brett Hayes reached a one-year, $600,000 deal Tuesday.
