The Arizona Diamondbacks may retain the services of SS Cliff Pennington for one more season. Pennington is arbitration-eligible for one more year. "Veteran leadership, he can play multiple positions," general manager Kevin Towers said of Pennington. "Having him kind of there with those two guys [Chris Owings and Didi Gregorius] is good."

The Arizona Diamondbacks activated SS Cliff Pennington (thumb) from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, Aug. 6, and optioned RP Bo Schultz to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Pennington could wind up serving in a platoon at the 6 with Didi Gregorius in Arizona. At best Pennington is solely an NL-only option for those in need of a middle infielder.

The biggest position player battle for the Arizona Diamondbacks this spring will be at shortstop, where SS Didi Gregorius, SS Chris Owings and SS Cliff Pennington are battling for playing time. General manager Kevin Towers believes the incumbent is the favorite heading into camp. "To me, the favorite has to be Didi," Towers said. "He was our shortstop last year. For a rookie, I thought he played very, very well. Great defender. He got off to a real hot start. The league probably caught up with him a little bit at the end. He probably got a little bit tired."
