Angels | Cliff Pennington to be activated Saturday

Sun, 22 May 2016 18:45:12 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, May 28.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington should see regular at-bats until Andrelton Simmons returns, but he is only an option for desperate owners in AL-only formats.

Angels | Cliff Pennington placed on disabled list

Fri, 13 May 2016 17:27:40 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have placed SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left hamstring. In a corresponding move, INF Gregorio Petit has been recalled from Class AAA Salt Lake.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington's tenure as the Angels' No. 1 shortstop was short-lived, after Andrelton Simmons (thumb) went down with a sprained left thumb that will have him sidelined for six to eight weeks. At this point, it is uncertain if Brendan Ryan will receive most of the action at short while Pennington is sidelined or if he will split time with Petit. However, neither player should be considered as anything more than middle infield depth in AL-only fantasy leagues.

Angels | Cliff Pennington hurt

Fri, 13 May 2016 05:31:40 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Cliff Pennington (hamstring) left the game Thursday, May 12, in the fifth inning with a hamstring cramp. He is considered day-to-day for the team's series with the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington doesn't carry much in the way of fantasy value as it is, but this is noteworthy because Brendan Ryan may be the only healthy shortstop the Angels have right about now. This was only a cramp, so there is a chance Pennington won't miss too much time, but the Angels can ill afford too many more injuries.

Angels | Daniel Nava, Johnny Giavotella out

Sun, 08 May 2016 11:07:59 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup against Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Andriese Sunday, May 8. SS Cliff Pennington will start at second base and is batting seventh, while OF Ji-Man Choi will start in left field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Pennington has gone 3-for-12 with zero RBI in five games this month and is not a great fantasy option in most leagues. Choi is hitting only .067 this season and should be avoided in all leagues.

Angels | Three Angels not in the lineup

Sun, 01 May 2016 11:13:13 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Rafael Ortega, C Carlos Perez and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels Sunday, May 1. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting sixth in the lineup. OF Shane Robinson will start in left field and is batting eighth, while SS Cliff Pennington will start at second base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto has at least one hit in six of his last seven starts and has six RBI during that span. Soto could be used in two-catcher leagues. Owners should avoid using Pennington and Robinson for the time being.

Angels | C.J. Cron, Johnny Giavotella sitting

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 14:58:25 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B C.J. Cron and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 27. 1B Ji-Man Choi is serving as the designated hitter and is batting ninth, while SS Cliff Pennington is at the keystone and is hitting seventh against Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young.

Fantasy Tip: Giavotella and Pennington are likely locked into a platoon and should only be rostered in the deepest AL-only leagues, with Pennington being the more attractive one. Choi, a switch-hitter, has only one hit in nine at-bats off the bench this year and is a very weak daily target tonight.

Angels | Platoon at 2B for Angels?

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 15:20:55 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS Cliff Pennington is starting at second base over 2B Johnny Giavotella for the second time in the last three games Monday, April 25, and this could wind up being a platoon between the two infielders. Pennington, a switch-hitter, would start against right-handers and Giavotella would start against lefties.

Fantasy Tip: Neither player is much of an offensive force, and Giavotella has issues on defense, too. Because neither will see consistent at-bats at the keystone, their fantasy value is limited to deep AL-only leagues as middle infield insurance. Pennington is a lotto ticket for the desperate in daily formats tonight against Kansas City Royals starter Ian Kennedy.

Angels | Two Halos sitting out

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 14:36:06 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2B Johnny Giavotella and 1B C.J. Cron are out Saturday, April 23, with 2B Cliff Pennington hitting seventh and 1B Ji-Man Choi hitting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Pennington nor Choi make good DFS plays tonight against Felix Hernandez.

Angels | Johnny Giavotella not in lineup

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 14:48:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2B Johnny Giavotella is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 19. SS Cliff Pennington is starting at second base and is batting ninth against Chicago White Sox SP Mat Latos.

Fantasy Tip: Giavotella is off to a 4-for-32 (.125) start and could continue to lose playing time at the keystone. Pennington is himself a light hitter and is more known for his defensive prowess. Look elsewhere for salary cap saviors in daily fantasy formats.

Angels | Carlos Perez, Johnny Giavotella out

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 09:03:19 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Carlos Perez and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup against Minnesota Twins SP Ricky Nolasco Saturday, April 16. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting eighth, while SS Cliff Pennington will start at second base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto and Pennington have received limited playing time over the first two weeks of the season. Soto could be a sleeper option for owners in daily fantasy leagues, but owners in most leagues likely will be able to find better options for both positions.
