Pirates | Pittsburgh sitting four starters

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 09:44:49 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen, 3B Jung Ho Kang, C Francisco Cervelli and SS Jordy Mercer are not in the starting lineup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez Sunday, July 24. OF Starling Marte will start in center field, while OF Gregory Polanco will start in left field. 3B David Freese will start at third base and is batting third. OF Matt Joyce will start in right field and is batting fifth. C Elias Diaz will start at catcher and is batting seventh, while 2B Sean Rodriguez will start at shortstop and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Freese is hitting only .190 over the last seven games but should still be a decent starting option in some leagues. Joyce is hitting .207 in July and probably can be avoided in most leagues. Diaz was recently called up from the minor leagues and should not be used by owners at this point. Rodriguez is hitting .251 with 10 home runs this season but should only be used in NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Cutch drives in three more runs

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 20:57:47 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and three RBIs Saturday, July 9, against the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Cutch has turned up the intensity at the plate in July, hitting .313 (10-for-32) with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs, but he is still hitting just .246 overall for the season. He has struggled at the dish all season for fantasy owners, but remains an obvious must-start. If recent history is any indication, he is due for a monster second half.

Fantasy Tip: McCutchen has shown some signs of life lately, but he still hasnít gone on an extended tear. Keep starting him in season-long leagues, but he doesn't have much appeal in DFS formats right now.

Pirates | Could Andrew McCutchen be traded?

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 06:15:00 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen will likely remain with the team through this season, but he could be shopped in the offseason. Top prospect OF Austin Meadows could be ready to start in center in 2017.

Fantasy Tip: McCutchen is in the midst of the worst year of his career with a .240-12-32 line. He only has stolen two bases in six attempts as well, and the 29-year-old appears to be losing at least one of those five tools. He has time to turn it around, and he's too good of a hitter not to. If you're going to buy low on him, do so without consideration that his stolen bases could return.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen still dinged up

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 14:39:53 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen (thumb) believes his issues to date have been related to a "balky" thumb. At the same time, hitting second in the batting order has ended up working out for McCutchen, as he's received fewer at-bats with two outs and nobody on base.

Fantasy Tip: The former NL MVP is having a real tough time in June, being just 7-for-47 (.149) with only one extra-base hit in 12 games this month. Even so, McCutchen is too talented of a player to keep struggling, and he was able to overcome a slow start last year as well before putting up his usual splendid numbers. He should be fine despite his current thumb ailment.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen's grip too tight

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 11:05:36 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen is hitting .241/.321/.408 with nine home runs and 68 strikeouts in 60 games, and his swing-and-miss (12.5%) and strikeout rates (24.8%) are both career highs. He hinted that his struggles might be related to how he's gripping the bat. "I've come to figure out I was gripping the bat a little too tight," McCutchen said. "When things aren't going the way you want them to go, sometimes you can get a little tense. Come to figure out, that's what was happening, that's why my thumb was catching the majority of the beating. I just need to relax my top (right) hand a little more, stay away from that jamming over and over again."

Fantasy Tip: McCutchen is also chasing more pitches outside the zone, and his lack of stolen bases has also made him a fantasy disappointment to this point of the season. Remember, though, that he got off to a terrible start in 2015, too, only to rebound nicely. We're not convinced that McCutchen can't do it again this year, so it wouldn't hurt to try buying low on him now.
