Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Jeff Clement (knee) is unlikely to play in a game at any level until at least July after having microfracture surgery on his left knee in the offseason. Clement acknowledged that his knee won't allow him to be a major league catcher anymore. His future is likely at first base. "As much as I'd like to tell you that catching would be the thing, because that's what I love doing the most," Clement said, "they've made it pretty clear that's out the window."

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Jeff Clement is a long shot to make the big league roster out of Spring Training now that the team has 1B Garrett Atkins, 1B Lyle Overbay, OF Steve Pearce, 3B Andy Marte and 3B Josh Fields, according to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. "You don't want to ever say a player has missed it," general manager Neal Huntington said of Clement. "The potential is still there. We have seen the raw power. We still see the things that we liked when we acquired him as part of the five players that we got from Seattle. But there may be some things out of his control."

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Jeff Clement (knee) will have surgery on his left knee Wednesday, Sept. 22, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic reports. He'll have microfracture surgery, and it won't be known until after the operation if he'll be ready for spring training.
