Only one player in the majors has more at-bats than Mayberry's 45 without drawing a walk (Milwaukee Brewers OF Nyjer Morgan). Only three players entering Thursday, April 26, had struck out more times than Mayberry in 45 or fewer at-bats. His 14 strikeouts account for 31 percent of his at-bats. When he's put the ball in play, 25 percent of the time it is a pop up on the infield.

The manager challenged Mayberry to get going if he wants to see more playing time. "I'm going to put him out there, but he's got to get going. He's got to get some hits. We needed to win games more than he needs at-bats. This isn't about one guy," Manuel said. "It's about 25 guys. Playing good is how you get to play."

Thu, 19 Apr 2012 12:20:21 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies hitting coach Greg Gross recently noticed a flaw in OF John Mayberry Jr.'s stance and positioning at the plate. "The change creeps in when things aren't going quite right," said Gross. "When the results aren't there, he has a tendency to grind it out more. When he gets in that mode, he's like, 'I'm going to really make sure, really make sure.' And he gets bent over a little bit." Mayberry has only one extra-base hit, nine strikeouts and just one walk. However, Charlie Manuel isn't giving up on him. "He'll get to play," the manager said. "He'll get a chance to get going. But he'll play more if he starts hitting like he did in the second half of the season last year. That's kind of where it's at. I didn't give up on him."

"When I do my lineups, there are positions there where I like Pierre," skipper Charlie Manuel said. "Pierre has done a lot of things. He knows all about the game. He's going to stay ready. He works his butt off. He comes to the ballpark early. He wants to play. However we want to use him, I feel like he fits that."
