Tigers | Justin Upton hits milestone homer

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 19:45:37 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton went 2-for-3 with a solo home run Monday, July 18, against the Minnesota Twins. The homer was the 200th of his career, and was the difference maker in a 1-0 win.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has turned up the intensity at the plate lately, posting five multi-hit games over the past 10 games, raising his average from .227 to .236 dating back to July 2. He is a solid fantasy option due to his power potential, but he is even better if he can keep improving his average.

Tigers | James McCann resting Sunday

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 08:28:15 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann is out of the starting lineup against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Sunday, July 17. C Jarrod Saltalamacchia will bat eighth and start behind the plate. In addition, OF Justin Upton is batting sixth and playing left field, with OF Tyler Collins hitting seventh and starting in right field.

Fantasy Tip: Saltalamacchia and Upton haven't been hitting enough recently to warrant starting in DFS. Collins is 3-for-8 in his career against Ventura but is only batting .148 through 27 at-bats in 2016, making him nothing more than an inexpensive flier option.

Tigers | Justin Upton activated Sunday

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 07:12:42 -0700

The Detroit Tigers have activated OF Justin Upton from the bereavement list and he will be in the starting lineup against the Kansas City Royals Sunday, July 17. In a corresponding move, OF Steven Moya was optioned to Class AAA Toledo.

Fantasy Tip: Although Moya has shown flashes of brilliance this season, his high strikeout totals (35 through 95 at-bats) and shaky defense explain why he was sent to the minors instead of OF Tyler Collins. Upton is batting just .235 with nine home runs and 38 RBI and has struck out 112 times through 328 at-bats, in what has turned out to be a nightmarish first season for him in the American League.

Tigers | Justin Upton on bereavement list

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 13:32:23 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton was placed on the bereavement list Thursday, July 14. OF Tyler Collins is starting in left field and batting eighth against Kansas City Royals SP Ian Kennedy Friday, July 15.

Fantasy Tip: Year 1 in Detroit has been unkind to Upton and his fantasy owners. There is some buy-low appeal, but don't be surprised if the 28-year-old outfield continues to struggle. He currently sits with an underwhelming .235/.289/.381 slash line. Collins is a low-end fantasy option in all fantasy formats and shouldn't receive much playing time when Upton returns.

Tigers | Justin Upton's hit streak snapped

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 20:23:42 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton was held hitless in four at-bats Wednesday, June 22, against the Seattle Mariners to snap his 11-game hitting streak. He entered play as the only player in the majors with a double-digit hit streak.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has been red hot and he remains a must-start in all fantasy formats after a slow start. He still has four homers and 14 RBIs over his past 12 games.

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton went 1-for-3 with a walk Tuesday, June 21, against the Seattle Mariners to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is hitting .311 (14-for-45) with eight runs scored, four homers and 14 RBIs during the impressive streak. After a slow start to the season Upton is slowly making it up to his impatient fantasy owners.

Tigers | Justin Upton tags a pair in 12-inning win

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 21:59:43 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton extended his hitting streak to 10 games on Monday, June 20, blasting a two-run home run in the seventh inning before connecting on a walk-off solo blast in the 12th in a victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has finally started to hit with the power most expected from him this spring. The 28-year-old slugger has four homers over his last three games and 14 RBI during his hitting streak. To put those totals into some perspective, Upton entered June with three home runs and 11 RBI in 48 games. He is obviously locked in after a miserable start and needs to be active in all leagues.

Tigers | Justin Upton showing signs of life

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 21:11:29 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, walk and three RBIs Saturday, June 18, against the Kansas City Royals to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

Fantasy Tip: Upton is hitting .313 (10-for-32) during the eight-game hitting streak with two homers and 11 RBIs. He started out very slowly, but he is starting to warm it up at the plate and give the Tigers and fantasy owners the player they thought they were getting.

Tigers | Victor Martinez out again

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 14:03:38 -0700

Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martinez (knee) is not in the starting lineup against Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale Wednesday, June 15. OF Justin Upton will serve as the designated hitter, while 3B Mike Aviles will start in left field and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Aviles has been playing better lately with a .294 average and one RBI in the last seven days but does not appear to be a strong option since he is hitting only .111 against left-handed pitchers this season.

Tigers | Justin Upton showing signs of life

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 21:48:53 -0700

Detroit Tigers OF Justin Upton finished 2-for-4, including an RBI double and a two-run triple, as well as a bases-loaded walk and scored twice against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, June 14.

Fantasy Tip: Upton has 11 RBI this month, matching his total from April and May combined. Since his last off-day on June 4, the three-time All-Star has lifted his batting average from .214 to .229 and hit safely in seven of those nine contests, including four multi-hit games. Upton's four home runs are disappointing, but it does appear his bat is starting to wake up, making now a good buy-low window for a player with 20/20 potential (he is stuck on four homers and three steals at the moment).
