Mon, 20 May 2013 16:53:22 -0700 Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost said he's looking to "mix and match" different relievers in the eighth inning to give RP Kelvin Herrera a chance to pitch in lower-leverage situations. RPs Aaron Crow, Tim Collins, Luke Hochevar or even Bruce Chen could become the primary setup man to RP Greg Holland while Herrera works on some things. Herrera allowed a game-winning homer Sunday, May 19, and it was his eighth homer allowed in his last 14 innings. Fantasy Tip: There's no telling who might emerge as the new eighth-inning setup man, or if Herrera will get the job back rather quickly. Herrera can be dropped now in most leagues as Holland's primary handcuff while he works out his problems in allowing the long ball.
Tue, 07 May 2013 13:28:35 -0700 Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost said he'll choose between RPs Aaron Crow and Luke Hochevar for a save situation Tuesday, May 7, with RP Greg Holland being rested. Fantasy Tip: Holland threw each of the last two nights, culminating in 27 offerings in his blown save last night. Crow and Kelvin Herrera haven't been pitching well, either, so Holland doesn't appear to be in any imminent danger of losing his job right now. If you own Crow, get him into your lineup, but don't make a dash to pick up Crow or Herrera unless you're in a deep AL league and are scouring for potential save sources.
Fri, 15 Mar 2013 16:51:48 -0700 Kansas City Royals SP Luke Hochevar made his first outing in relief Friday, March 15, and tossed two perfect innings. Fantasy Tip: Hochevar may prove more effective in short bursts in relief. It remains to be seen. It's also entirely impossible that he moves back to the bullpen if Bruce Chen faulters. It's never wise to completely give up on talent like this completely.
Wed, 13 Mar 2013 08:54:44 -0700 Kansas City Royals SP Luke Hochevar is being placed in the bullpen.
Thu, 07 Mar 2013 13:09:00 -0800 Kansas City Royals SPs Bruce Chen and Luke Hochevar both looked good during their outings Tuesday, March 5, as they compete for the No. 5 starting job. Chen gave up a run and two hits while striking out two in three innings and Hochevar tossed three scoreless innings, and manager Ned Yost had good things to say about both pitchers. SP Luis Mendoza is also in the picture in this competition.
Sat, 23 Feb 2013 11:54:58 -0800 The Colorado Rockies had expressed interest in Kansas City Royals SPs Bruce Chen and Luke Hochevar during the offseason but talks never gained traction.
Tue, 12 Feb 2013 16:57:03 -0800 Kansas City Royals SP Luke Hochevar, who is battling for one of the last spots in the starting rotation, thinks he found a mechanical flaw after viewing film of his 32 starts from last year and many starts from 2011. Hochevar admits that he tried to do too much when the game was on the line. "When I'd step on the gas," he said, "my front side would fly open, and my ball would get flat. The thing is, if my front side stays in, I can step on the gas and (be effective). My front side stays in. I keep my angle. I don't get flat. The hitter doesn't pick me up early." Pitching coach Dave Eiland wants Hochevar to limit his repertoire in order to tighten the muscle-memory mechanics of his best pitches.
Mon, 11 Feb 2013 15:23:31 -0800 Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost said SPs Luis Mendoza, Luke Hochevar, Bruce Chen, Everett Teaford and Will Smith are fighting for the No. 5 rotation spot this spring.
Mon, 11 Feb 2013 14:51:29 -0800 Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost thinks the team can get away with a seven-man bullpen this year, which is one less than they carried for much of last season. RPs Greg Holland, Kelvin Herrera, Tim Collins and Aaron Crow are locks, and Ps Luke Hochevar, Bruce Chen and Luis Mendoza could be battling for the final spot. Hochevar, Chen and Mendoza are also all out of minor league options.
Fri, 18 Jan 2013 11:30:12 -0800 The Kansas City Royals avoided arbitration with SP Luke Hochevar Friday, Jan. 18, by agreeing to a one-year, $4.65 million deal. Hochevar can also make up to $100,000 in incentives.
