Fri, 26 Apr 2013 12:27:00 -0700 Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey has been a disappointment to start the season with a 7.94 ERA in 17 innings. However, the Twins are not considering bumping him from the rotation. Pelfrey has seen a slight drop in velocity since the 2011 season, but he's struggled to command the ball more than anything. Pitchers often have command as the last thing that returns when coming back from Tommy John surgery, and Pelfrey has returned in less than 12 months. He has thrown only 39.8 percent of his pitches in the zone, which is the sixth-lowest in baseball. Pelfrey's sinker is not staying down in the zone, either, which has resulted in solid contact by opponents. Pelfrey's release point is also lower than it was back in 2011. The lower release point makes it unable for him to create downward movement on his pitches, with his sinker and slider flattening out when they reach the strike zone. Pelfrey is always constantly tweaking his mechanics in order to create more movement on his pitches, and he recently shifted to the first base side of the pitching rubber this year. A very slow tempo on the mound for Pelfrey may be a sign that he doesn't have confidence in his stuff early in the season. Fantasy Tip: The bottom line: Pelfrey isn't far enough removed from Tommy John surgery to confidently rely on him for your fantasy baseball rotation. He clearly has plenty of mechanical issues, as well, so it might take some time for him to correct those problems in order to improve his command. Don't let him work through those issues on your fantasy squad, and deep AL-only leaguers should keep him on the bench for now.
Wed, 17 Apr 2013 17:29:22 -0700 The Minnesota Twins pushed back their rotation one day following the rainout Wednesday, April 17, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. As a result, SP Mike Pelfrey will not start Sunday, April 21, and he will now pitch Monday, April 22, against the Miami Marlins. Fantasy Tip: The bad news is that Pelfrey loses his two-start status for fantasy owners in deeper AL-only leagues this week, but he'll draw the lowly Marlins in one of his two scheduled starts next week. He is also tentatively scheduled to face the Texas Rangers next weekend.
Sun, 14 Apr 2013 08:16:20 -0700 The Minnesota Twins have pushed their entire starting rotation back one day because of their game being rained out against the New York Mets Sunday, April 14. SPs Kevin Correia, Mike Pelfrey and Vance Worley will start in an upcoming three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Tue, 26 Feb 2013 14:25:44 -0800 Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey (elbow) gave up three runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings Tuesday, Feb. 26, and his fastball was sitting around 88 mph after it usually sits around 92 mph. He's not worried about his velocity in spring camp, though, as he said his fastball usually picks up speed as the spring progresses.
Fri, 22 Feb 2013 15:19:46 -0800 The Minnesota Twins are starting to believe that SP Mike Pelfrey (elbow) will be a real asset to their rotation this year. He will start a spring game against the Toronto Blue Jays, and last week he hit the 10-month milestone of his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Pelfrey hasn't been limited in any way this spring and hasn't suffered any setbacks in his recovery. "You know what," pitching coach Rick Anderson said. "You don't even know he's been hurt." The Twins are raving about Pelfrey's progress and hope he can be the leader of a young rotation.
Mon, 18 Feb 2013 08:20:06 -0800 Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, Feb. 18, and everything was down in the zone. His changeup also looked good.
Sat, 16 Feb 2013 11:41:02 -0800 Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey said the New York Mets had expressed interest in bringing him back on a lesser deal but wanted to have the flexibility to use him as a reliever. Pelfrey was only interested in remaining a starter.
Thu, 14 Feb 2013 12:13:04 -0800 Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey (elbow) will be treated like the rest of the pitchers this spring, and he's already thrown off a mound 40 times since Tommy John surgery, including six times off a mound since mid-January. The team plans to limit him to around 180 innings this year, however. "If the season started tomorrow, I would have worked up to be ready at this point," Pelfrey said. "Realistically, after 7 1/2 months, I threw 90 pitches to hitters, so I could pitch (now). They told me the other day, 'No restrictions. You're on the schedule with everybody else.' That's what I wanted."
Thu, 14 Feb 2013 09:46:04 -0800 Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey (elbow) threw roughly 50 pitches in a bullpen session Thursday, Feb. 14, and is confident he'll be ready for opening day.
Mon, 11 Feb 2013 13:21:16 -0800 Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, Feb. 11, and felt fine. He is on schedule and is throwing without restrictions.
